Male lions only mate with females which are part of their pride. The choice to join the pride is that of the female. When in heat, the female accommodates the male, but only the dominant male of her pride. Other males in the pride are NOT accepted by the female, without driving the dominant male away.
Bad example.
I take it you've never seen film of lions mating. Lioness' fiercely snarling and snapping, her neck firmly held in the jaws of the much heavier more powerful male. Yeah, she said 'yes' alrighty.
