House told to alter intelligence bill (Bush Opposes Crack Down on Illegal Immigration)
The Washington Times ^ | October 4, 2004 | Stephen Dinan

Posted on 10/04/2004 7:17:15 AM PDT by Goldwater4ever

The White House has told House Republicans that it wants them to remove provisions in their intelligence-overhaul bill that would crack down on illegal aliens' obtaining drivers' licenses, allow easier deportation and limit the use of foreign consular ID cards. The Senate's bill lacks those provisions, and as the two chambers race toward trying to pass a bill before the Nov. 2 election, the measures are a potential stumbling block. The White House wants those provisions out, according to a congressional source familiar with the bill. "They have expressed desire to kill some of the immigration provisions and gut some of others," the source said, speaking on the condition of anonymity. Rosemary Jenks, a lobbyist for stricter immigration controls for the group NumbersUSA , who has been tracking the bill, said White House policy officials met with Republican staffers to urge them to remove the provisions, even though White House officials initially had signed off on those same provisions before the bill was introduced officially. "The White House was involved in the negotiations before the bill was introduced, and now, for some reason, it has come back and decided to insist that the main provisions, the most effective provisions of the bill, be gutted," she said. She said House Republican leaders appear to be standing firm in refusing the White House demands. A White House spokesman did not return a call for comment yesterday. ***

"This goes to the very heart of the entire conspiracy of 9/11," he said. "These people entered the country, got driver's licenses, used those driver's licenses to obtain the services they needed, and then used those driver's licenses to get on the plane."

"Has President Bush ever given a decent explanation for his unwillingness to close and seal our borders "

He told O'reilly that economic prosperity in Mexico would solve the problem. We've been told the same thing about NAFTA since before it was passed. Pres. Bush is not being served well on this subject by his advisors. I seriously believe that he is not aware of the devistation to too many Americans by this invasion.

Has President Bush ever given a decent explanation for his unwillingness to close and seal our borders against all illegal immigration? If he has, I missed it.

On June 29, 2004, Bush's appointtee, Jo Anne Barnhart signed the Social Security Totalization Agreement with Mexico that will allow millions of former, current and future Mexican illegal aliens to apply for and receive literally hundreds of billions of dollars in Social Security benefits for themselves, their wives and their children at home, in Mexico, even if their wives and children have never stepped foot in the US.

Does this answer your question?

Oops! You asked 'why'. Why else? To get himself reelected.

After all, can't get that conservative agenda implemented unless the conservatives are in office, right?

Giving Mexican illegal aliens US Social Security benefits is a part of the conservative agenda, isn't it? </sarcasm>

McCain...a real man. I see him as the same sort of opportunist as Kerry. Keating Five ring a bell.

What?!

Do you honestly believe that all of this is happening behind Bush's back without his knowledge?

Do you really think his appointed Social Security Commissioner to sign a Totalization Agreement with Mexico that will allow literally millions of former, current and future Mexican illegal aliens to apply for and receive SS benefits without first consulting him?

By the same token, did Tommy Thompson, his appointed HHS director create and distribute the Medicare propaganda without Bush's knowledge?

Please, AuntB.

Hiya, PhiKapMom. As disgusted as I am with illegal immigration, I am still voting for Bush. However, I am sick of the "Kerry would be worse!" argument. Instead of pointing out that the opposition would be worse, Bush supporters need to say why their candidate deserves the vote. Not why the other guy doesn't. People who do not want to vote for Bush need to hear what Bush will do to keep illegals from draining our resources.

I think people who are saying they won't vote for Bush actually will in the end. But if you do not live in a border state, you do not understand the frustration felt by many of us. I don't care that the Republican party is supposed to be the party that supports business. I should have to have my tax money spent on illegals so that contractors, farmers, and others can have cheaper labor? My tax dollars should go to the eduacation, care and welfare of anchor babies? Why? So Vicente isn't offended? Why isn't anything being done to stop the flow? Why aren't businesses being punished for hiring illegals? Why were the sweeps out here stopped?

And don't think non-border states are safe. Once the illegals have bled us dry, they will move on to other areas.

OK so I won't vote for McCain. If the R clowns are for open borders, I won't vote for them Guiliani and JEB (probbaly open border person) are still viable.

Then there is the Libertarian party. At least they are for smaller government and lower taxes.

PING!

Just to bring this to the top so the idiots in the Republican Camp can see there is a revolt going on. Between the pixx poor debate and wanting us to pay for the illegals education (ORIN HATCH-R-UTAH) while letting them invade the country - GWB will loose by default and win by luck. The DEMS will still be a viable party if this brings down BUSH. IF BUSh SHUTS THE BORDER he wins and the DEMS are history for 50 years because of the liberals demise.

"Do you honestly believe that all of this is happening behind Bush's back without his knowledge? "

No. Not entirely, but I do believe he is not aware to what extent we out here dealing with it are going through. He knows what his advisors tell him. Period. He lives in the most isolated world one can imagine. You may remember when we had the big push on FR to help the farmers in Klamath Falls, Oregon. We protested, faced down federal agents, built an encampment for months, got the word out on all manner of media. Until Greg Walden and Gordon Smith got on board Air Force One (because they had been made aware their republican careers were over if they didn't fix the mess)and flew over Klamath Lake and showed the Pres. it was full and explained the facts of life to him, he knew nothing of the problem. That night on national TV he said, "There's some folks in Klamath Falls who aren't being treated very well!"

The Bush big money doners tell him the invasion is a good thing. He's an idealist and wants to believe it will be "okay". The majority of republicans who know about all this don't want to shake up the status quo and open their mouths. He's not getting the facts, because if he is, he is a danger to this republic and I don't believe that. Worst of all, his own supporters will not speak against anything of the party line. I'm telling you there is a good chance Bush doesn't have a clue what is really happening out here in the hustings. We should raise hell with our republican congressmen for not giving this SSA order the oversight it deserved. They do know what is going on in their home states, but will never know we object unless we say so.

Dan, I may well be wrong, but I don't want to believe Bush is just dumb or corrupt on this. O'reilly told him 10% of the illegals were criminals. Bush asked where he got that figure as if he'd NEVER heard it before.

"And don't think non-border states are safe."

Too late, Bella, way too late. For over a decade in So. Oregon one could not get a job unless you were "bi-lingual". The property values have plunged where the illegals are housed...just ask me, I lost $50,000 because of it when I had to sell my home. Neighborhoods are barios that were once beautiful. I could go on and on.

I'm Libertarian on many issues. HOWEVER, the Libertarian party platform doesn't have jack on illegal immigration. They are for open borders. It's where I part company with them.

Then who do I vote for? Guess no one, if the Libertarians are for open borders - so is BUSH, so is KERRY. It is only the American Citizens who are against the illegal invasion. Bet our taxes could be cut big time if we got rid of the illegals. Can hardly wait to be told what a biggot I am and how I discriinate against them because they will take jobs from my Kids and G'Kids, especially after I pay for their education based on ORIN HATCH's "DREAM EDUCATION" bill.

* I know the politicians are only doing what they know is best for us. It is government for the politicians, by the po;iticians etc.

Have you heard anything to the effect that Fox demanded we take his immigrants and give them Soc. Security in exchange for his support on FTAA?

Remember he was pushing it very hard the week prior to 911

I remember and I was alarmed then, too. He seems to have not relented one bit on this.

But . . . on the current bill, the White House approved the illegal immigrant crackdown portions and then changed their mind.

Dubya has to come clean on this, but we wouldn't be able to ask the question in a town hall.

"Can hardly wait to be told what a biggot I am"

The founding fathers were called worse.

Your comments for the White House can be sent at: www.whitehouse.gov
You will have to give your name and address, which unfortunately turns most people off.

"Illegal immigrants" are nothing more than an esoteric political concept for Dubya. He and his family and their friends will never daily have to slog through the consequences of unfettered illegal immigration.

I believe that Bill O'Reilly, of all people, refers to the genre (wealthy politicians) as "the ruling class." Very apt, in my mind. As an ordinary working citizen, I encounter the consequences every day.

Yes, I remember the Klamath Falls affair.

But that is one thing. The Totalization agreement and Medicare propaganda are another.

Here's some links for you to check out:

Judiciary Committee Letter to Barnhart
Committee on Ways and Means: Fact Sheet Mexican Totalization Agreement
Proposed Totalization Agreement with Mexico Presents Unique Challenges

Please. Bush knew then and he knows now what this agreement contains and he hasn't made a single move to change it.

Here's another:

Department of Health and Human Services, Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services --Video News Releases, B-302710, May 19, 2004

Scroll down and read the conclusions of GAO General Counsel Gamboa. This was propaganda designed to deceive the voting public in order to garner public favor for his Medicare legislation, pure and simple.

You can believe whatever you want, but when Clinton was in office, there wasn't a single FReeper worth their salt who believed that anything that happened on his watch occurred without his knowledge or direction.

It was the democrats who defended Clinton saying the same sorts of things you've said about Bush.
