In document, detective spelled out theory of Laci Peterson's death

(Court TV) — After 18 weeks of trial and 167 witnesses, jurors hearing Scott Peterson's murder case still have no clear explanation of how or where his wife, Laci, was killed.

But in a sealed search-warrant request, obtained exclusively by Court TV's Catherine Crier, Modesto police detective Craig Grogan spelled out his theory of how the 27-year-old expectant mother met her end.

In the Feb. 11, 2003, request for a search of Scott Peterson's home and warehouse, the lead detective wrote, "Evidence at the scene suggested that Laci Peterson was the victim of 'soft kill' where there would be limited blood evidence at the scene. The small amount of blood recovered in their bed could indicate a location where Laci Peterson had been assaulted."

Grogan theorized that there was little evidence of a struggle because Laci Peterson was drugged before being killed. She may have been suffocated, he said.

MORE FOR THE START OF MONDAY'S HEARING:

Tidal expert in Peterson trial to testify about San Francisco Bay

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. - Prosecutors in Scott Peterson's murder trial claim it's no coincidence that the bodies of his pregnant wife and the fetus she carried washed up so close to where Peterson claims to have been fishing the morning she vanished.

As the government entered its final stretch of the case, expected to wrap up this week, a tidal expert from the U.S. Geological Survey began his discussion about currents in San Francisco Bay as he works to explain how the bodies floated to where they were found.

The expert, Ralph Cheng, was due back on the stand Monday.

Prosecutors allege the 31-year-old former fertilizer .....

Tidal expert could be valuable witness in Peterson case

REDWOOD CITY -- Prosecutors wrapping up their murder case against Scott Peterson have a persuasive piece of evidence left in their arsenal: a hydrologist who can explain how a body dumped in the San Francisco Bay can wash ashore at Point Isabel Regional Shoreline months later.

Ralph Cheng, a senior researcher with the U.S. Geological Survey, is expected to say that the tides from Brooks Island -- where Peterson said he was fishing the day his pregnant wife disappeared -- flow directly to the Richmond shore.

The bodies of Laci Peterson and her unborn child were discovered there four and a half months after Laci's disappearance.

Cheng is a key witness for prosecutors, who say Peterson killed his wife and dumped her body in the Bay on Christmas Eve, 2002.

"It's not a bad way to end," said former San Francisco prosecutor Jim Hammer, who is watching the trial, "but the question arises: Where were the bodies all this time? And why didn't the (radar) scanners pick them up?"

Cheng began his testimony last Thursday, and is scheduled to take the stand again today.

Defense attorney Mark Geragos, who has questioned Cheng's credentials and his conclusions, will likely argue that anyone could have thrown Laci's.........

Detective ends his testimony
Defense points to lead investigator's contradictions

REDWOOD CITY -- A day after the lead detective assigned to investigate Laci Peterson's disappearance told jurors Scott Peterson seemed uninterested in the status of the case, defense lawyers challenged the contention, noting Peterson regularly checked in with police and family.

Modesto police Detective Craig Grogan was on the witness stand for nearly eight days before the conclusion of his testimony Thursday. Defense attorneys used him to accuse police of narrowly focusing on their client while ignoring other possible leads.

Under questioning from prosecutors Wednesday, Grogan testified that Peterson inquired with police only about once a month.

But on cross-examination Thursday.......

Peterson's concern for Laci at issue

REDWOOD CITY - Modesto Police Detective Craig Grogan backpedaled Thursday, saying it was misleading for him to say that Scott Peterson asked for status reports on the investigation into his missing pregnant wife only once a month after she disappeared, according to testimony in Peterson's double-murder trial.

The lead detective in the investigation of Laci Peterson's disappearance and death, Grogan has spent the past two weeks detailing for the jury how his efforts to clear Peterson as a suspect in his wife's disappearance led to only more suspicion.

But for the past two days, Peterson's defense has tried to tear the veil of suspicion down. On Thursday, Geragos attacked Grogan's assertion that Peterson called the detective rarely to inquire about his missing wife........

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Court hears new contradiction
Peterson reversal on plans for his home draws giggles in court

REDWOOD CITY — Scott Peterson eloquently wrote to his mother-in-law that he wanted his Modesto home to be just right for the return of his missing, pregnant wife. However, he wrote that message in an e-mail about four weeks after he explored selling the house, according to testimony Wednesday.

Those conflicting actions drew giggles from people in the courtroom.

Just before court ended, lead Detective Craig Grogan revealed that police found one pillow without a pillowcase while searching the home.

That could support a prosecution theory that Laci Peterson was smothered Dec. 23, 2002, or early the next morning. Questioning of Grogan, which has stretched over seven court days, is expected to end today.

Prosecutors might rest their double-homicide case against Scott Peterson, 31, next week.

Peterson's lead attorney, Mark Geragos, began Wednesday showing how police shifted theories on how the substitute teacher was killed, but developed tunnel vision when ......

Agents testify about tailing
Officers say Peterson knew he was followed and drove erratically, later apologized

REDWOOD CITY — Scott Peterson mocked undercover agents tailing him before his arrest, walking up to a car to praise an officer's driving and applauding when others followed one of his erratic maneuvers, the agents said Thursday.

Their testimony came after the lead detective in the case completed a stint on the witness stand that stretched over eight days.

Before stepping down, Modesto police Detective Craig Grogan reiterated why he felt Peterson's actions were suspicious, but acknowledged that Peterson was in regular contact with police about his missing wife.

Also, Grogan said investigators apparently did not test a piece of fabric that a cadaver-scenting dog found interesting. The dog found the fabric 528 feet from Laci Peterson's remains.

Prosecutors contend that Peterson murdered his pregnant wife and unborn son, Conner, late Dec. 23 or early Dec. 24, 2002, and dumped her body in San Francisco Bay.

The defense maintains that police targeted Scott Peterson quickly after Laci Peterson's family reported her missing on Christmas Eve, with officers ig- noring other leads as they conducted a sloppy and sprawling investigation of their prime suspect. .........

Geragos, with records of wiretapped phone calls recorded by police, went over a long list of calls that Peterson made to police and Laci Peterson's family members. In the calls, Peterson seems concerned about the investigation into Laci's disappearance. Peterson made 11 calls

I usually just lurk these threads and don't post, but I'm out of lurking mode to say: Don't use antibiotics if all you have is a cold! A cold is a viral infection, and antibiotics only work on bacteria. Misuse of antibiotics is a huge reason why we now have drug-resistant bacteria, which are extremely dangerous!

Off my soapbox now. Is the noose tightening on Scotty boy?

Well, you're right that antibiotics won't work on a virus.

I thought "cold" could mean all sorts of things. I mean, who really knows what microorganism is causing her symptoms unless she visits a doctor? Which I'm sure she'll do if it persists.

The evidence is there. Now it will all come down to the personalities of the jurors. We don't know all that much about that, but we have heard that the jury won't look at Scott as they walk by, and that when they're in the jury box, some of them show signs of being impatient with Geragos.

mornin RB sorry to hear you are down with a cold.....you are supposed to drink lots of fluids and sometimes contact or one of those medicines drys you up. Try hot showers to keep your body's temperature up which helps healing or keep a heating pad under your feet where you sit.
