*HOUSTON SPCA RECEIVES HURRICANE VICTIMS EVACUATED FROM GRAND CAYMAN ISLAND *
The Houston SPCA sent representatives to meet a Cayman Airways Flight on Saturday, October 2, 2004. This was the first of several flights that will carry more than 200 innocent animal victims of Hurricane Ivan to safety at the Houston SPCA and Citizens for Animal Protection.
Patricia Mercer, Houston SPCA President, said, "Acceptance of the Cayman Island refugee animals is another example of how the Houston SPCA is dedicated to helping all animals in disasters. Receiving these 200 dogs and cats will bring the total we have saved from this year's hurricanes to almost 500. We were glad to answer the call for help, sending half of the food in our shelter down to feed the animals before their journey here.
My former boss.
Sometimes I miss those days.
Sometimes I don't.
I wonder if since they are flying animals out they might not be flying some relief supplies in. I am going to make a call tomorrow...does anyone want a reply? I'd be happy to pass along.
Sell your computer now, and send the money to the Haitians.
Quit buying beer. Cancel your cable t.v. If you have two
pairs of pants, send one to Haiti. Buy generic spaghetti sauce instead of Ragu - that extra 20 cents could buy half of a roll of toilet paper for Haitians drowning in fecal material.
It is immoral to spend one thin dime more than your mortgage and your grocery bill while people in Grand Cayman are homeless.
I could go through your closet and find enough expendable crap to lecture you for days on how immoral you are, using your standards. And don't get me started on your hobbies.
The point is that in a Republic with a market economy, we get to do whatever we want to do with our disposable income. Usually, pinch-faced, holier-than-thou leftists are the ones telling us how we are wasting our disposable income on things like SUV's.
So, hurry!!! You still have time to log off and donate your computer to the Haitian relief effort. I'll see you on the dock, unloading bags of rice!!!(did you know that the money that you spent on coffee this week could have bought rice for a Haitian family?!?!?!?!).
hehe, you're hardcore man. ;-)
Reminds me of a debate I was having with a liberal girlfriend of mine. We were talking about welfare and taxes , and how I felt it was immoral to use the armed power of the government to take money from one group of people to give to another group.
And I suggested that if the liberals "care" so much about the downtrodden why don't all the superwealthy limousine liberals and all the other liberals just start some massive charity to hand out a "living wage" and "affordable housing", I mean surely Bill Gates and George Soros could make a dent?
She chewed that over a while and said it wouldnt work because people wouldnt be "generous" enough. Pure Marxism. I then pointed out the car dealership across the street and said , listen you dont really *need* your brand-new Durango, you should go trade it in on a Kia, and put the proceeds into feeding the hungry.
Well, let's just say we're not dating anymore! :-)
Hey humanitarian. Thought you might like to know that chances are the doggies and kitties are coming in via the cargo hold. Not the best of situations but it gets them to a safe place. Now the last I was aware live humans are not knowingly put into the cargo hold for a flight.
I have some experience with this as my husband is a recently retired 757, 767 pilot. He confirms that on passenger aircraft, the critters go in the cargo hold. Exceptions are 'working dogs'such as those that the blind use.
Haiti was a disaster before it was a "disaster". What did you do to help before? I assume you feed your pound puppies. To make your point you would have to have sent the money instead for relief victims somewhere in the world. I go back to the either/or. Nothing wrong with doing both. Personally, I would like to see these animals treated, fostered and at some time returned to good homes in their own country because we have needy animals here too. I have some concerns about this organization and support my shelters locally but I stand by my post that they have only done what they are set up to do.
Hey, man, I'm still waitin' on the docks at Port-Au-Prince,
sweating my a** off while I unload rice. Where are you?
Surely you've sold your computer and your bowling ball by
now to pay for the Haitian Relief Effort.
I've already had to stomp a kitty to death - she was trying
to catch a rat, that a Haitian could have eaten.
BTW - I've gone over your household accounts, and it seems
that you are spending about $12 a month on Ole Roy for your
dog. How the $%#%#! can you do that, while Haitians are
starving?!?!?!?!? that's 122 bucks a year - enough to
keep a Haitian up to his knees in Uncle Ben's!!!!!!!! If
you want me to drop by for a home euthansia for your dog,
so we can stop this hemorrhage of cash-that-should-be-rice-
for-Haiti, let me know.
In the mean time - my back's killin' me, man.
- Mrs. Heinz-Kerry.
I woul give my life for my family, friends, and yes, for my pets. Am I evil?
Thanks. Pretty much beat up here.
Most folks on the thread seem to value the live of dogs over Hatians (who I reckon deserve to die because they have not built a market economy, or something.)
Especially disappointed in sinkspur who presents as a Catholic. Though, I am not not one, I have always allied and admired the stand of the RC church for the sanctity of human life.
THis was my point in posting in the first place.
There are so many non-rofit organizations to help the victims of the hurricanes, as well as the United States and the UN (ultimately, the US again). Yet one Humane Society spends money (donated money, mind you) to rescue pets who may find new homes here in the states, and people cry foul?
Give me a break.
Ad hominem is all you got?
Why are you asking me that?
Sigh. My point is that someone spent resources on animals that could be spent on humans.
I find that wrong headed, because human beings are more valuable than animals. Man was created in the image and likeness of God; animals were not.
We all do what we can in our own way. Everyone that works has donated to human life and I'm offended about your comment about people here not caring . Must be getting kind of crowded on that throne, huh?
Now if the Red Cross were rescuing pets, you'd have a beef.
Red Herring!
This is from just ONE fund (USAID: Caribbean Hurricane Update):
Total USAID Humanitarian Assistance to the Caribbean - $10,935,759
Your implication that NOTHING is being done for humans and that this donated flight, along with some donated pet food, has taken away from the limited resources available to the region is just plain false.
Lemme get this staight. Spend multi thousands to bring cats and dogs to Houston for adoption, (prolly, ultimate euthanasia) while Hatians, Dominicans, and other human beings are wading around in shi* and dead bodies?
No. Many ASPCAs have no doggies and kitties to adopt. So overseas animals are brought in for adoption. The local SPCA needs to have animals to beg for money and stay in business.
Are you posting from the public library? Because if you're not, why should you expect others to take your advice when you yourself seem reticent to do so?
And ~you~ are that someone. You spent $200 to fix up a DOG while HUMANS are starving? "I find that wrong headed, because human beings are more valuable than animals."
Pot... Kettle... Black...
