Ex-senator critical of Iraq war and blind support of Isreal

Blind support of Israel has led the United States to support the oppression of Palestineans and an unjust war in Iraq, a former U.S. senator told Toledo-area Arab Americans last night.

Addressing the 16th annual banquet of the Greater Toledo Association of Arab Americans at the SeaGate Centre, keynote speaker James Abourezk said U.S. policy is allowing Israel to destroy Palestinian society.

"We're witnessing one of the most brutal occupations in history in Palestine," said Mr. Abourezk, a South Dakota Democrat who served in the Senate from 1973 to 1979.

"Abourezk said U.S. policy is allowing Israel to destroy Palestinian society."

I don't recall hearing that Israelis are recruiting Arab children to die and kill innocents with them.

I don't recall that Israelis immerse themselves in the entrails of their murdered enemy.

I don't recall Israelis are siphoning American and EU aid money to import illegal weapons from Iran.

I don't recall Israelis lynching political dissenters in public squares.

I guess I just disagree with this Arab-"american" and I'm happy he's no longer in office. Not to say that there are not Americans of Arab descent that love freedom and Democracy, but they should have to pass the sniff test first, and this guy stinks.

From wsj. 2002(know this slimebag has been for a long time)

One of the signers of the "Not in Our Name" petition (link in PDF format), demanding that America leave Saddam Hussein in power, was Jim Abourezk, a Democratic former senator from South Dakota. Abourezk served one term, 1973-79, and World magazine reports he employed a young staffer by the name of Tom Daschle:

According to an unsigned office memo, Mr. Daschle was the senator's point man on "Space, Defense (including Veterans), Foreign Affairs (including Middle East), [and] South Dakota Projects." Another unsigned memo gave him "primary responsibility for Middle East and all other foreign relations matters."

In any other Senate office, responsibility over Middle Eastern affairs would hardly have been considered a plum assignment. But Sen. Abourezk's parents were Lebanese, and he considered the Arab-Israeli conflict his top priority. Though he campaigned largely on farm issues back in South Dakota, he quickly established a reputation in Washington as the go-to guy for any group with an ax to grind against Israel--so much so that one radio commentator dubbed him "the Senator from Saudi Dakota." Sometimes his battles were petty, like his attempt to pressure the IRS to revoke the tax-exempt status of the United Jewish Appeal (a charitable organization similar to the United Way), or his vote against confirming Henry Kissinger as America's first Jewish Secretary of State.

But other battles challenged the most basic assumptions of U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East. Mr. Abourezk called the Israeli government "terrorist" and consistently opposed arms sales to Tel Aviv [sic]. He called for recognition of the PLO and embraced Syrian President Hafez Assad, a major sponsor of international terrorism. (Later, during the Gulf War, the former senator even compared Israel to Nazi Germany: "Israel has been grabbing land since 1948, and I don't know how you call it self-defense. . . . Hitler said he took Czechoslovakia in self-defense, you know.")

"We're witnessing one of the most brutal occupations in history in Palestine,"

That is because Israel is enduring one of the most brutal terrorist wars waged against them.
