But even so, what's the point? Is it wrong to bring a note card? I really don't know and am curious. I think most people will just shrug it off.

The candidates were specifically forbidden, by mutual agreement, to bring no notes into the debate. They were allowed blank paper and a pencil or pen, pre-screened by the debate officials. The pencil and paper were already screened and awaited each candidate at the podium. Pre-written material is cheating, just as hiding notes during a test is cheating.
