NEWSWEEK POLL: BUSH LEAD GONE
Sat Oct 02 2004 16:42:32 ET

New York-Sixty-one percent of Americans who watched the first presidential debate on September 30 say Sen. John Kerry won; 19 percent say President George W. Bush won and 16 percent say they tied, according to the latest Newsweek Poll which was conducted after the debate ended. Fifty-six percent say Kerry did better than they expected; 11 percent say so for Bush. Thirty-eight percent say Bush did worse than expected;  3 percent say so for Kerry, the poll shows.

The debate erased the lead the Bush/Cheney ticket has held over Kerry/Edwards in the Newsweek Poll since the Republican convention. In a three-way trial heat including Ralph Nader/Peter Camejo, among registered voters Kerry/Edwards leads Bush/Cheney 47 percent v. 45 percent with 2 percent for Nader/Camejo. In a two-way heat, Kerry/Edwards leads 49 percent v. 46 percent for Bush/Cheney, the poll shows.

A 62-percent majority of viewers says Kerry seemed more confident and self-assured (26% say so for Bush) and 51 percent say Kerry had better command of issues and facts (37% for Bush). Forty-seven percent say Kerry seemed more personally likeable (41 % for Bush) and 49 percent say Kerry came closer to reflecting their own views on most foreign policy issues (43% for Bush). The two were nearly even on several other points, including who came across as a strong leader (47% Kerry, 44% Bush) and who had a better plan for dealing with the situation in Iraq (45% for both). Forty percent of viewers thought Kerry was too wordy and 57 percent thought Bush was too repetitive.

Fifty-seven percent of all poll respondents say they are dissatisfied with the way things are going in the United States at this time. Bush's job approval rating dropped two points from the Sept. 9-10 Newsweek Poll to 46 percent-a 6-point drop since the poll taken during and after the Republican convention. Forty-eight percent of registered voters polled say they would not like to see Bush re-elected but almost as many (46%) say they would.

PUTUPJOB WROTE: "We have Bush to thank for this one. He could have finished Kerry the other night...Another fine mess Bush has gotten us into."

It may sound strange, but since 1 Thes. 5:18 says "Give thanks in ALL circumstances," I am thankful for what happened in the debate.

I am thankful that the "wake up call" happened with several weeks before the election, so we don't get complacent!!!

We must work like we are at least 5 - 10 points behind to make up for the RATs' voter fraud!!!

If Newsweek were anymore slanted to the left, they would need a crutch under their left arm to keep them from falling over alltogether.

Newsweek is slanted to the left -- don't worry!

Take nothing for granted. Put the election in the hands of God and lets work our tails off to make this victory happen

Humble? Humble is for priest and children. Not Bush supporters.

I'll get my first good nights sleep when this election is over and Bush has won.

I agree with you my friend.I'm still reeling over Bush's showing the other night .He was HORRIBLE..What the HELL was he thinking ??? The was one point where I swear it seemed like he just spaced out in mid answer for like 3 minutes ( probable 3 seconds ..but what a silence it was )..GEEEEZZZ..Who's stupid friggin idea was it to let him run around Fla all day knowing he had to be awake and sharp for the debates that night? ..There had to be 6/7 times where Kerry , that horses ass commie , could have been SLAMMED into the wall and Bush just let him slide by ..Im still bummed out badly here. I think he handed away the election ..Mark my word.History will note he lost it in a pathetic , half hearted debat showing.

If you think Bush's mannerisms were good then I think you are in the VAST minority. I do not know anyone who thought his gestures did him any good. No one.

Why? We KNEW this was coming just as we knew Kerry would be declared the WINNER of the debate despite any gaffes (putting a Nazi camp into the Soviet Union and claiming to have been there), distortions, lies, falsehoods or conflicting views expressed (Bush's coalition is 'unilateral' & bad but Kerry would have US-N Korea ONLY talks).

BREATHE. Besides, who cares about "Registered voters" polling. That's always STRONGLY Democratic and less so than "Adults."

It's really quite breathtaking that any criticism of the president on this thread is met with vitriol and claims of troll, sleeper troll, etc. I guess free thinking and honest criticism aren't really welcome here. I deeply hope George W, Bush is re-elected. I have given time, money and effort to that end. Pretending that he can't improve his performance actually does him a disservice.

Yes!

I couldn't even get my letters (an H between M and H?) right and I still lack humility.

That's just not humble in any way shape or form.

Sleep well. This is in the bag.

Nobody likes or trusts Kerry. Hating Bush ain't enough.
Watch them marginalize themselves ... in anti-American splendor ... this next 30 days.

It'll be the ugliest sheyatt we'll ever see. The end of the Vietnam hippies straglehold on cultural power. Thank GOD!

That's what this election is about. The anti-American left is wheezing. Let's euthanize those mofos.

So, in summary, Newsweek vastly overstated Gore's support in 2000. Interesting....

Was that also "Princeton Demassociates"?

OK, i'll bite....who is trying to sabotage the prez?

can't you just admit he was awful in the debate and it was HIS fault. reagan was able to prevail in the second debate because he was a brilliant communicator and yes, i had confidence in his ability to be a good prez. bush came out of this looking whiny, flustered, and pissed. it wasn't pleasant to see.

Yes, and the all the BS Bush let go unchallenged, helped convince God knows how many people that Kerry sounds "strong" on Iraq and could be a good war time President.

What was Bush thinking?

Im still bummed out badly here. I think he handed away the election ..Mark my word.History will note he lost it in a pathetic, half hearted debat showing.

I keep telling myself Bush has to win.
But deep down I have the same awful feeling.

No I don't think he lost the election on one debate, however he performed poorly in contrast to an energized Kerry. Still there are two debates to go and Kerry can get into his arrogant mode and screw up big time. The pressure is on Kerry too don't forget

I think the president will take this debate business more seriously and prepare prepare prepare

And get some rest Mr President. Putting in a full day of campaigning and then trying to debate under pressure was a foolish move

I guess free thinking and honest criticism aren't really welcome here.

When I see statements like that, I honestly wonder if they are even worthy of response. It implies that anyone not in agreement with you, isn't honest nor independent.

For the record everyone admits Stylistically, Kerry won. Everyone admits if in the same situation, which we aren't, we could think of a thousand retorts to every statement of the Senator's.

Where I diverge is in the thinking Style will register over Substance. I see no reason to despair when Kerry left in his wake statements that will hang him, while G.W. did not.

And, if you cannot discern there are people that registered tomorrow to trash Bush, if you are not aware people typically will have inactive accounts to dredge up to use in key moments specifically to savage the opposition, you lack an understanding of how these boards operate. I nor anyone else has called all critical of the performance Trolls or Sleepers. Those that meet the criteria know exactly who they are.

I'm sure he can but you have to realize this is just a mild Kerry bump created by post debate MSM coverage of a "win" and overall insignificant and totally expected. What matters is state-by-state and among likely voters.

"Word about Drudge: Sensational headlines boost his site ratings."

I know, It just caught me off guard. All the polls I've been reading were showing no change.

Exactly. Great points. And remember that the dems were spinnin' this thing before the debate even began, it was a do-or-die for Kerry and they knew it. They had to make sure that the perception was that Kerry won, no matter what happened.

As for the hand-wringers... so what if the POTUS looked tired? He's actually WORKING for a living, unlike Frenchie. So what if he looked "angry" when Kerry was LYING through his teeth? What should he have been doing...filing his nails? Looking nonplussed? Acting as if what Kerry was saying WASN'T a load of crap? I swear, the hand-wringers make me almost as mad as the dems, these days! Wake up, people! I'm sure that plenty of DUmmies joined up at FR months ago for a chance to come in here and encourage more of the "sky is fallling" scenarios. For crying out loud. Obviously Rove et al know that it wasn't our President's best debate. Get over it!! They're working on it...they "hear" you. Now stop the freaking hand wringing!

/end rant
