NEWSWEEK POLL: BUSH LEAD GONE
Sat Oct 02 2004 16:42:32 ET
New York-Sixty-one percent of Americans who watched the first presidential debate on September 30 say Sen. John Kerry won; 19 percent say President George W. Bush won and 16 percent say they tied, according to the latest Newsweek Poll which was conducted after the debate ended. Fifty-six percent say Kerry did better than they expected; 11 percent say so for Bush. Thirty-eight percent say Bush did worse than expected; 3 percent say so for Kerry, the poll shows.
The debate erased the lead the Bush/Cheney ticket has held over Kerry/Edwards in the Newsweek Poll since the Republican convention. In a three-way trial heat including Ralph Nader/Peter Camejo, among registered voters Kerry/Edwards leads Bush/Cheney 47 percent v. 45 percent with 2 percent for Nader/Camejo. In a two-way heat, Kerry/Edwards leads 49 percent v. 46 percent for Bush/Cheney, the poll shows.
A 62-percent majority of viewers says Kerry seemed more confident and self-assured (26% say so for Bush) and 51 percent say Kerry had better command of issues and facts (37% for Bush). Forty-seven percent say Kerry seemed more personally likeable (41 % for Bush) and 49 percent say Kerry came closer to reflecting their own views on most foreign policy issues (43% for Bush). The two were nearly even on several other points, including who came across as a strong leader (47% Kerry, 44% Bush) and who had a better plan for dealing with the situation in Iraq (45% for both). Forty percent of viewers thought Kerry was too wordy and 57 percent thought Bush was too repetitive.
Fifty-seven percent of all poll respondents say they are dissatisfied with the way things are going in the United States at this time. Bush's job approval rating dropped two points from the Sept. 9-10 Newsweek Poll to 46 percent-a 6-point drop since the poll taken during and after the Republican convention. Forty-eight percent of registered voters polled say they would not like to see Bush re-elected but almost as many (46%) say they would.
Excerpt, the rest of the article is here: NEWSWEEK POLL: BUSH LEAD GONE
The very last poll I believe is anything done by Newsweek. They are farther left than Time, and that's a commie rag.
Uh, hardly.
People were tearing Newsweek to shreds for their manufactured polling results, they suspected they might be attempting to provide a big boost to make it a dramatic shift in Kerry's favor later. Surprise! They were right.
I will never waver in my support for W. Neither will I whine about one sorry left leaning rag. I'm better than that. I hope others feel the same way as I do.
GWB blew it big-time ... he was poorly prepared and came across as tired and not on his game. Considering the stakes this is unconscionable on his part ... and to those on his campaign staff. The priority that day was to beat his opponent in a nationally televised debate ... basically all Dubya had to do was (at the very least) break even ... he didn't accomplish either ... he failed his staff and his supporters. I'm for Bush ... but listening to the debate made me wonder if this guy is hitting on all eight cylinders.
Thanks THEY need that. :)
We all know how well 'our George' speaks in public settings - we grant him a lot of slack because of the sincerity of his beliefs. In that regard, his performance Thursday night is the least of my concerns; it's how well he will defend and advance the Bush Doctrine in the coming weeks that have my attention.
A slip up every now and then is ok - everyone has a bad day. But if he continues to exhibit a complete lack of ability to articulate, defend and advance his position over the coming weeks, we have a problem.
Any salesman will tell you to emphasize the sizzle and not the steak. Kerry's basic positions are so contrary to the long-term interests to this country, that you'd think they'd be rejected outright.
But if his siren song of safety and freedom without sacrifice is not effectively counter-balanced, we could be looking at a major turning point in US history.
....I was a DEMOCRAT. I fixed that...
No that's not really a fix that's just part of growing up.
We are all born DEMOCRATS..We whine all the time, we are totally unproductive,we are totally at the mercy of some greater power to feed us, keep us warm, clean up after we make a mess and wipe our butts... and we have the arrogance that makes us believe the world rotates around our feelings...
Eventually most of us grow up. It's only the ones that never change in the face of life's evidence that are STUPID.
Congratulations.
You wer literally as MAD AS ZELL then, right? :)
I guess we're going to have to put them in the wagon and pull them through this. They're dropping like flies around here!
This is great. Send it to the RNC and WH. Need an ad like this.
LOL. I agree.
OH yeah. I can't believe some of these people whining and crying over a lousy article. It'll take more than that to knock me off my perch.
I don't think it's real panic. I just think there was a sense here and elsewhere in the conservative world ... fueled in a lot of ways, IMHO, by some of what Limbaugh's been saying ... that at the end of the day, on 11/2, Bush would win this thing going away and it wouldn't be close, that there was no way anyone in their right mind would vote for John Kerry and that all Bush would have to do is be presidential and above the fray and say "liberal, liberal, liberal" and "terrorism, terrorism, terrorism" and he'd seal the deal. And IMHO, this race was ALWAYS destined to be close. Always. I think Kerry won the debate the other night, but not by much and nothing cataclysmically shifted in this race, regardless of this poll. But what I'm hoping is that this poll won't spook people into panic, but might negate some overconfidence and taking things for granted, and remind people that the White House and all of us are going to have to work our fingers absolutely to the bone, 24/7, no rest and no quarter, for the next 31 days to pull this off.
ty.I appreciate that.
Are they working on the site? I'm on cable and it is slower than molasses on FR. I checked on other sites and they are ok.
Since I am a regular poster to this board, I distinctly remember many people saying Bush was ahead 5 to 8 points before the debate. I agree that the Newsweek number was not realistic, but other polls had Bush ahead by 8 to 11 points, not just Newsweek. So what is it now? Is he ahead 5 to 8 points? If not, why?
