NEWSWEEK POLL: BUSH LEAD GONE
Sat Oct 02 2004 16:42:32 ET
New York-Sixty-one percent of Americans who watched the first presidential debate on September 30 say Sen. John Kerry won; 19 percent say President George W. Bush won and 16 percent say they tied, according to the latest Newsweek Poll which was conducted after the debate ended. Fifty-six percent say Kerry did better than they expected; 11 percent say so for Bush. Thirty-eight percent say Bush did worse than expected; 3 percent say so for Kerry, the poll shows.
The debate erased the lead the Bush/Cheney ticket has held over Kerry/Edwards in the Newsweek Poll since the Republican convention. In a three-way trial heat including Ralph Nader/Peter Camejo, among registered voters Kerry/Edwards leads Bush/Cheney 47 percent v. 45 percent with 2 percent for Nader/Camejo. In a two-way heat, Kerry/Edwards leads 49 percent v. 46 percent for Bush/Cheney, the poll shows.
A 62-percent majority of viewers says Kerry seemed more confident and self-assured (26% say so for Bush) and 51 percent say Kerry had better command of issues and facts (37% for Bush). Forty-seven percent say Kerry seemed more personally likeable (41 % for Bush) and 49 percent say Kerry came closer to reflecting their own views on most foreign policy issues (43% for Bush). The two were nearly even on several other points, including who came across as a strong leader (47% Kerry, 44% Bush) and who had a better plan for dealing with the situation in Iraq (45% for both). Forty percent of viewers thought Kerry was too wordy and 57 percent thought Bush was too repetitive.
Fifty-seven percent of all poll respondents say they are dissatisfied with the way things are going in the United States at this time. Bush's job approval rating dropped two points from the Sept. 9-10 Newsweek Poll to 46 percent-a 6-point drop since the poll taken during and after the Republican convention. Forty-eight percent of registered voters polled say they would not like to see Bush re-elected but almost as many (46%) say they would.
Excerpt, the rest of the article is here: NEWSWEEK POLL: BUSH LEAD GONE
I'm not throwing in the towel after one poll. But this is after all a scientific poll showing major movement for Kerry. Rasmussen is another data point, but there's still no way to interpret this as anything other than bad news.
Exactly. Newsweek rigged the new poll numbers versus their previous poll by manipulating their sample by:
Increasing the number of demoncrats by 15%
Increasing the number of Independents by 3%
DECREASING the number of Republicans by 12%
Princeton Associates polling is run by demoncrat hacks.
gabby needs to come back on Nov. 3 and say that, LOL!
And they think they're fooling us.........hehe.....
That comparison is irrelevant in my view--Bush is no Reagan in terms of speaking ability, and Kerry no Mondale--he's more polished and dangerous.
Met. too! And over half of them are within the last week or so.
Look at post 682. The poll is rigged.
Don't be so gullible. You'll live longer.
The MSM is determined to give the election to Kerry. They tell the people what to think, focus on who "won" the debate instead of focusing on what Kerry actually said, and then hammer home the message that Bush's lead in gone. This whole process is getting scary.
Wrong! According to Rasmussen 6% of his polled samples changed their opinion due to the debate. Net result Bush -1% (Bush +1, Kerry +2).
As for who will handle issues better overall, among registered voters Bush leads Kerry 52 to 40 percent on terrorism and homeland security; the situation in Iraq (49% vs. 44%); the situation involving Israel and the Palestinians (46% vs. 39%) and controlling the spread of nuclear weapons (47% v. 43%). Kerry scores better on the economy (52% vs. 39%); health care, including Medicare (56% to 34%) and American jobs and foreign competition (54% vs. 36%), the poll shows. The debate is the only major event and it was about foreign policy. The above numbers show that after debate Bush leads Kerry in all foreign policy issues. In other words Bush leads in the categories that the debate was about. Kerry could not have gotten an advantage.
Right on!
I don't pick a president on "HOW" they say something. I pick a president on "WHAT" they say.
I think you're overreacting.
I suspected Bush would come out badly from this debate because it is just not his thing. He excels in set-piece speeches, like the State of the Union addresses and his various UN speeches, but can't hack improvisational speaking. Still, I think Kerry is more likely to implode in the remaining debates. His innate arrogance will now be combined with complacency because he is so happy with himself for his performance in the first debate. Also, Cheney can slow down Kerry's momentum (if you can call it that) by demolishing Edwards in the veep debate.
As for this poll, it just confirms something we should already know - this will be a close election determined by which side has the better ground game. All the talk of landslides and winning NJ (and Rove's ridiculous Washington Times interview in which he boasted of various states being locked up for Bush) should stop. If we keep Ohio and Florida, we win. That's it.
Are you wearing red, white or blue?
Maybe could've used more rest?! You can bet your bottom dollar he needed more rest! And this is not 20/20 hindsight--when I heard on tv that he was exhausting himself that day, I thought WTF?! And I don't mean to be cold, but this is hardball, presidential politics--the hurricane victims would have been there the day after the debates, the important thing for W. to do was to do keep his eyes on the big prize by crushing Kerry. I fear things will go downhill from here. How quickly fortunes turn.
I was confident before, but I'm starting to become even more so. CBS is putting out false headlines, Newsweek is fudging the party numbers polled, and we're being inundated with sleepers and trolls. Now, would any of this be occuring if Kerry really DID take a big lead and destroy the Prez in the debates? I think not.
My fingers are ready for battle. Come out, come out, all sleepers and Trolls alike! Not all of us are so easily swayed by your attempts to demoralize and affect public opinion.
Hey, wait... a.... minute..... isn't that Gabby Hayes in the front row wearing the white shirt?
You're welcome! You need to post that on several threads, IMO.
