Mexico's 'Volcano of Fire' rumbles to life Associated Press
MEXICO CITY -- Mexico's "Volcano of Fire" belched plumes of smoke and fired hot rocks down its slopes Thursday, but officials said the activity posed no immediate threat to residents living in the area. ADVERTISEMENT
The explosions, which began Wednesday, were provoked by the collapse of a dome that had formed recently in the crater of the 12,533-foot volcano, located in the Pacific coast state of Colima.
Small landslides began on the north side of the volcano on Wednesday night, spreading to the west side on Thursday as well as increasing in size, according to a statement posted on the Web site of the volcano observatory at the University of Colima.
Pictures on the site showed fat clouds of smoke rising from the volcano's crater.
Monitoring flights over the volcano confirmed seismic activity and showed the landslides extending a half-mile down from the crater, the announcement noted. The plumes of smoke had become more intense Thursday as well.
For the moment, officials said there was no need to evacuate the surrounding communities. They maintained an existing yellow alert, which prohibits people from going within four miles of the volcano's crater.
The volcano, 300 miles west of Mexico City, has staged violent eruptions dozens of times since its first recorded eruption in 1560.
In 1999, eruptions sent glowing rock three miles down the volcano's slopes and sent up a plume of ash more than 5 miles high.
A 1913 explosion created a crater 1,650 feet deep, blasted fast-moving flows of hot ash down the volcano's slopes and rained ash on Guadalajara, 75 miles to the north.
wow, two volcanoes on the same day ... what's going on here ... IT'S BUSH'S FAULT!!!!!!!
Did this happen because of that moose that biting your sister?
:)
I'd say it was the end of times.... But Al Gore isn't President.. ;-) /humor
Haliburton. Haliburton. Haliburton.
No... Wait Kerry was for the volcano before he was against the volcano...no wait a minute this is the wrong volcano at the wrong time no wait....
ALL HAIL THE MIGHTY POWER OF CARL ROVE!!!!!
Ol' George really gets around. Kerrry just sits on his a$$ in the Senate (well, not really, he's never there) and does nothing but gripe.
I, too, question the timing of this.
"Three...Mt. Etna in Sicily, too"
I haven't seen anything on this. Did it blow today?
Colima has been erupting more or less continuously for a good 6 years.
At any given moment there are usually at least a half-dozen volcanoes erupting around the world.
What you're going to see here on the AP, and on FR, is the "attention effect." Because of Mt. St. Helens volcano articles will be more likely to make the wires, and more likely to be posted on FR, giving the false impression that worldwide volcanic activity has suddenly increased.
Four hurricanes hit Fla. Are we about to elect the anti-Christ? < /DU insanity>
OK,
Now,
California will fall into the ocean,
The Loch Ness Monster will be seen swimming up the Rio Grande to avoid all the ruckus and
Elvis will appear with Bigfoot in Las Vegas for a quickie wedding.
Reality is stranger than any fiction.
BTTT!!
"Mexico's 'Volcano of Fire'"
As opposed to, what, a volcano of crushed ice?
Etna has been having a flank eruption for the past four weeks. It's had three of those since 2000.
Lots of volcanoes all over the place erupt all the time, people just don't seek out the info and it doesn't make the news.
Don't forget the swarm of earthquakes in California this week.
