Come on, he never "claimed" that 10,052 soldiers had died in Iraq. It was a simple misstatement that he corrected IMMEDIATELY. It's easy to see that he thought there was an extra 0 in there when he read the question.

Talk about your overreactions. Why are we blaming the moderator for what happened last night?

Well, considering he WROTE the questions, that seems a stretch. Besides, the way the magic number 1000 has been bandied about by his peers, it also seems a stretch that he would have gotten it wrong.

Not buying that. A sixth grader can read a four-digit number easily, and so can Lehrer. Just plant a little seed that some people will glom on to.

Because he was the prime reason why Bush is widely seen today as, let's just say less than successful, in the debate. If you couldn't see that the deck was stacked against Bush you either weren't looking or you don't recognize a sucker punch when you see it. Bush was sucker punched just by showing up at that rigged "debate".

"It was a simple misstatement"

I'm wondering how 'simple' a misstatement it is to confuse one thousand with ten thousand? Maybe for Lehrer it was wishful thinking?

Yes a subtle misstatement....some call it subliminal. What better way to put that horrific number in front of the voting public?
