"What we need isn't competition between blogs and mainstream news outlets, but a working symbiosis between the two."

Bah, humbug! "A working symbiosis" is precisely unfettered competition, ideally with every "news" source openly proclaiming its advocacy positions, and with consumers making the effort and having the courage to pursue the truth through the layers of bias.

I think I'm gonna start selling Red White and Blue P.J.'s with some sort of Blogger logo.

The tension between MSM and bloggers is equivalent to the tension between a soapy washcloth and a kid's dirty face - if there was no dirt, the washcloth wouldn't be necessary. I seem to recall Rush commenting on a national meeting of journalists where a bunch of them tried to vote that they didn't have to tell the truth when reporting stories...

Here's a pictoral representation of the working symbiosis between the old media and the Net.

Must be so darn frustrating to know they are being one upped by people in pajamas!

I have some amount of sympathy for MSM, they had it all to themselves for an awfully long time and that time is over. Change is tough.

At the same time, they have to recognize what brought this about. I believe a lot of them when they say they don't see any bias - the bias is so endemic that they really don't see it.

I'd rather read a fact checked partisan story than attempt to decode an "objective" story with internal bias.

Brian Williams, his co-anchor for the session, drew on his own concerns for a series of open-ended questions. "Now, if you have a modem and an opinion, in many cases, you're a journalist. The Internet -- is it good or bad for the discourse? Is it making us fiefdoms of one in our own homes with our computers? Is it counter to the kind of town square approach to journalism that a lot of us believe the founders both of the nation and journalism had in mind?"

I wonder if Brian Williams realizes how self serving and ignorant his statement is?

Obvious to anyone but Brian is that the “town square” consisted of everyone having a voice and airing their opinion in the town square. Here Brian seems to believe that the town square consisted of a couple guys telling everyone else how it is and no one else able to voice their opinion.

Posters on FreeRepublic.com, the same conservative discussion board where the accusation of forged documents began, also challenged the truth of an anti-Kerry report posted to conservative ChronWatch.com. They were right, the post was wrong and ChronWatch ran a correction.

Anybody know what this is referring to?

But it was Bill Moyers who tackled the reality...

Was he drunk when he did the tacklin' 'cause he can pack a punch after a fifth or two.

The New Media- us at FR and "bloggers", represent

POWER TO THE PEOPLE

Now where have I heard that?

Many members of the Old Media got their start when streetfuls of people would chant that.

Let me emphasize: The New Media is POWER TO THE PEOPLE!

Another thought wandered in.

The New Media, and bloggers, and forums (fora?) depend on Old Media articles posted on the Old Media websites as feedstock.

Oh, there are indies and web-only outlets but most of the articles here are from Old Media. Once they realize that they can cut off the flow.

I'd expect at the least a spate of copyright lawsuits to hit Jim.

If it wasn't for sites like Free Republic how could anyone get the truth? The MSM has been DOA for a while it's just that the older patriots of the MSM are just now killing over.

Do I detect a faint and distant smell of power grabbing and central planning in the breeze, when I read this write-up and observe this conference?

"power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts
absolutely"

The leftie media had absolutely power and they took its natural course... we're just the flashlight that suddenly revealed the seething mass of cockroaches knee-deep in the previously "gate-keeped" kitchen.

Journalists are like any other employee trying to fit in with their corporate culture. They can no more go against the grain than a corporate employee can buck the culture in his/her office environment. Therefore, the journalist hoping to move up within the MSM culture will trend left, will begin to despise the conservative mindset, will feel part of the elite as opposed to the masses (the rest of us) who need to be told what to think.

How exactly was this famed opinion poll phrased: "Do you believe that Dan Rather was duped and committed an honest mistake" -- or, "Do you believe that Dan Rather conspired to push a manufactured story based on documents he knew to be false, in order to adversely effect George Bush's reelection?"
