ALLENTOWN, Pa. -- A high school marching band has turned down an invitation to play for President George W. Bush during his visit to Allentown, Pa, Friday.
The band from Parkland High School said it wants to remain neutral in the presidential race.
The school superintendent announced the decision Thursday. She said it's a public school district and doesn't want to be divisive. Two other school districts said their marching bands will play for Bush at the rally.
Sean King, the director of marketing for the U.S. Scholastic Band Association, said he can't recall a high school band ever turning down an invitation to play for the president.
uhhh playing for the current president is a way to recognize the nation. If they played for kerry, who is not president, then it would be partisan.
Who the heck is the school super? The article didn't say.
If the kids took a vote for this, then so be it. But if this was a decision by administrators to deprive these kids the opportunity to play before the President, grrrrr!!!
I wonder if the band had a vote...
NEA union thug bump.
Sad.
These kids need to learn a thing or two about respect.
(God, I just sounded like my uncle for a minute there...)
What are the odds the Superintendent of that high school is a Dem??
bump
Vouchers anyone??
Gee, I wonder if the superintendent is a liberal.
I'd be angry if someone deprived me of the privilege of playing for the president.
A band won't play for the President of the United States. Unbelievable, disrespectful and foolish.
This is a good one. Did the students get to vote on this? I doubt it. In fact, I would wager that the superintendent and/or band director are the ones who made that decision.
If you go to a "public" school, I would think that it would be proper to play for any "elected" official. Are they saying that even if the president had visited three years ago they would not play for him? Only now because this is an election year?
I was in the choir in a Chicago Public School. We sang several times for Mayor Daly during election years. I don't recall anyone ever questioning the decision.
nick
We only have one President. What's to be divisive over?
I doubt that the KIDS in the band had any say in this at all.
This is nothing more than LEFTIST HATE - and the children suffer.
Well, thet always claimed that it was ALL for the children....

When a High school band declines an opportunity to perform for the President of the United States, that is NOT remaining neutral. That is making a definite statement of opposition. Regardless of who holds the office, it is an honor to be invited to perform for that office. The school superintendent can claim all she wants that she "doesn't want to be divisive", but she has very loudly made a very divisive statement with her decision. She is an idiot of the first order.
so, do we have a email address to express ourselves?
I am so tired, so very tired. This election can't come soon enought.
