Joint Iraqi – MNF Operation Commences in Samarra
Tikrit, Iraq – About 1,000 Iraqi Security Forces, supported by Soldiers from the 1st Infantry Division are in the process of securing the government and police buildings in Samarra early Oct. 1 at the request of the Interim Iraqi Government and the people of Samarra.

At midnight, Iraqi Security Forces, partnered with the 1st Infantry Division entered Samarra and took the first steps toward restoring normalcy to the city. As Iraqi Security Forces secured the Samarra Bridge, Task Force 1-26 Infantry Soldiers observed insurgents in speedboats downloading ordnance on the banks of the Tigris River. After firing warning shots, the Soldiers were engaged by anti-Iraqi forces. Task Force 1-26 responded and destroyed two boats killing the AIF.

Iraqi Security Forces and 1st Infantry Division Soldiers moved into the city and were attacked by AIF attempting to undermine the safety and security of the people of Samarra. The AIF attacked the Soldiers with rocket-propelled grenades and small arms fire. In multiple engagements throughout the morning Soldiers destroyed mortar sites, RPG teams, and vehicles carrying anti-Iraqi forces, killing numerous AIF. All units achieved their objectives.

Iraqi Security Forces and Multi-National Forces have conducted joint patrols in the city since re-seating the City Council on Sept. 9. Anti-Iraqi Force attacks and acts of intimidation against the people of Samarra have undermined the security situation in the city. Iraqi Security Forces and Coalition Forces are responding to restore order and normalcy for the people of Samarra.

Where's the part about them freeing the Turkish hostage? I read it this morning and now can't find it. That's great.

Aw geez! Every time I see a thread with MNF in it I think it's a thread about Monday Night Football.

Disappointed once again! :-)
