Protester Says She Prefers 'Serial Rapist' to George Bush

Coral Gables, Florida (CNSNews.com) - A protester declared Thursday evening that she would rather vote for a "serial rapist than George Bush" during a rally just outside of the University of Miami campus where the first presidential debate was held.

"I would vote for a serial rapist [rather] than George Bush," said Elizabeth Mercedes in an interview with CNSNews.com several hours before the debate began.

"I am very scared if [Bush] gets elected again, very scared," said Mercedes, who identified herself as a Democrat. Hundreds of anti-war activists and supporters of Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry lined the roadway leading to the debate site with signs and banners.

This is not the first time that protesters have linked voting and/or President Bush to rape. On September 1, a featured performer at a National Organization for Women rally in Central Park during the GOP convention in New York City accused President Bush of having "savagely raped " women "over and over" by allegedly stealing the 2000 presidential election.

At that New York rally, poet Molly Birnbaum said from the podium, "Imagine a way to erase that night four years ago when you (President Bush) savagely raped every pandemic woman over and over with each vote you got, a thrust with each state you stole."

During Thursday night's pre-debate protest, Mercedes said that many American voters have been "brainwashed" into supporting Bush.

"I think the majority of the American people just watch what's on TV and they don't research more into the issues. They don't read the newspapers, they just watch what's on TV and they believe everything that's on TV. I am sorry to say, but they are brainwashed," Mercedes said.

"I think half of the country knows what's gong on and is awake, the other half is just going with the flow," she said. "The American people are not as educated as the rest of the world."

A contingent of protesters carried 76 flag draped coffins to illustrate the death toll from the Iraq war in the month of September.

Deborah Smith of the Opt Out Project of Palm Beach said she came out to promote and an "anti-war message." Bush and Kerry failed to inspire her because "neither candidate is promising that they will end the war in Iraq," Smith said.

'John Kerry is a rock star'

Jackie Adams of Massachusetts wore a T-shirt reading "John Kerry is a Rock Star." Adams told CNSNews.com she was "all pro-Kerry" because "he's cool with all the young people and he will be good for the nation, too."

Anti-war protester Ferne Carpousis of the feminist peace group CodePink said voters should not even be debating whether to support Bush for re-election.

"What's to debate? Haven't enough people died? 76 died this month," Carpousis said. "We were lied to. George Bush lied to us and he lied to our Congress."

Andrea Buffa, another CodePink member, said, "Bush needs to come clean about the fact that there are no links between Iraq and September 11th."

Barbara Miranda of the group Broward Anti-War expressed her desire to "push Bush out the door," but added that she did not see Kerry as being that much better. "I am for [independent candidate Ralph] Nader," Miranda said.

Miranda said the Iraq war was "absolutely about oil," and she urged Americans to change their lifestyles.

Protestor Zo Tobi of Greenpeace USA said that the Bush administration's energy policy was killing people. "It's bad for security, health, jobs and the environment," said Tobi, who also insisted that Greenpeace USA is not partisan.

Cuban American protestors favoring the end of the economic embargo on Cuba called the U.S. policy toward the island nation "completely unfair."

"Let's end the embargo. We don't have an embargo on China. We don't have it on Vietnam. Why are we embargoing Cuba?" asked Cuban-born Carlos Martinez.

When asked his opinion of Cuban dictator Fidel Castro, Martinez declined to comment. "I practically have no opinion...Fidel Castro is the president of my country." When asked if he agreed with many Cuban immigrants to the U.S. that assessment that Castro was a brutal dictator, Martinez said, "I have no opinion on that."

OSAKA — The Osaka District Court on Friday sentenced Naoto Nakajima, 34, who raped three women and sexually assaulted two others to 14 years in prison. "The acts were to satisfy sexual desire, and that is very vicious and self-centered," Judge Munehisa Sugita said in handing down the sentence.

Between December 2003 and March this year in Osaka, Nakajima attacked five women from behind and threatened to stab them if they made a fuss, according to the ruling. Nakajima raped three of the women and stole 40,000 yen in cash and valuables. He sexually assaulted the other two, the court ruled. (Kyodo News)
