Rush Limbaugh: CBS Does It Again: Secret Draft Plan
RushLimbaugh.com ^ | 9/30/04 | Rush Limbaugh

Posted on 09/30/2004 6:25:42 PM PDT by wagglebee

CBS has done it again, and this is happening too much under the radar. I mean, some people know about this, and more and more people are learning about it, but I want to add an exclamation point to it. CBS News did a report recently, and I think it was late last week or early this week, this is already Thursday, so it probably was early this week. Dan Rather did it, in fact, quoting sources that there's a secret move to reinstate the draft after the election, that the Bush administration is working on it. And Rather's sources for this, my friends, are these -- and you've seen these -- these absolutely wacko Internet e-mails.

Now, I don't know what's going on with Dan Rather. Somebody needs to sit him down and send him somewhere to get an examination, because first off you have the forged document story when he goes on the air to deny that the documents are forged, and to do what he did. He claimed that the opposition and the people that were claiming the documents were forged were these partisan political operatives. He was referring to the bloggers on the Internet, and he said disparaging things about them. The mainstream press resents the Internet, resents bloggers, resents all of the new media.

So what has happened is they ran a story on the CBS Evening News about the draft coming back. Rather's sources are all of these Internet conspiracy kooks that are running around making the charge -- and he even went out and interviewed somebody, a woman, put her on the newscast, and she was in tears or near tears and talking about how she was scared to death. She didn't want her son to get killed, didn't want her son to be drafted, didn't want her son sent to die blah, blah, blah. Real gut wrenching, heart wrenching story and so forth. The whole thing is bogus. The woman is an anti-draft activist. She's an anti-war activist. The only legislation, and there is legislation in Congress to reinstate the draft. It has two cosponsors, both Democrats. One is Charles Rangel from Harlem, and the other is the outgoing retiring Ernest Hollings from South Carolina, and it's not even serious. They know they'll never get the votes for it. It's not even to reinstate the draft, it's nothing more than a political trick to generate this kind of phony, fraudulent, kooky e-mail used by wacko mainstream news sources now like Dan Rather and try to pass it off as genuine news.

What Rangel's stated purpose is, is he doesn't believe the sons and daughters of the rich are there, in Iraq or anywhere else, fighting for freedom or fighting for America. He thinks it's unfair, and he thinks that if the draft were actually reinstated we'd find out how people don't really want to fight this war on terror, and that's the only way to show it is when kids and parents refuse to support a draft. That will mean the country doesn't want to do this, it will show Bush is wrong, it will illustrate to the country. The whole thing is nothing more than a trick. And of course these Internet groups now have started mass mailings and producing posters and so forth warning kids between 18 and 25 that there's a Bush secret plan to get them drafted and sent off to war and die, and their parents are supposed to be just as alarmed, when it's all BS. Not even Rangel is serious about getting the draft back. It's all an election year trick.

Something else on this draft business. You know, CBS' parent company is Viacom. Viacom has many units. One of the Viacom units is MTV. So MTV and CBS are, shall we say, brethren under the Viacom umbrella. And there's a new initiative. MTV's Rock the Vote has now leapt onto this mock, stupid, false, phony draft story and said, "If young Americans aren't drafted to vote they may very well be drafted to serve in Iraq," according to MTV's Rock the Vote. A new initiative by the nationwide youth voter campaign, which also claims to be bipartisan but that's a bunch of gunk, is using the idea of a potential draft to inspire voter registration in the last days before the election. Visitors to the MTV Rock the Vote website can send out mock draft cards to would-be voters urging them to show up at the polls on November 2nd. The effort points out, among other things, that it would only take two or three days for a draft to be authorized and plans set in motion. Ladies and gentlemen, I have to tell you something. This is the federal government. They can't do anything in two to three days. They can't agree on a sentence in two to three days, much less how to punctuate it. But yet Rock the Vote's putting this notion out there that it would only take two or three days for a draft to be authorized and plans set in motion and, get this, 20-year-olds would be the first to be called up and women would be more likely to be included in the draft.

Well, wait a minute. Now, just one brief aside. What's wrong with that? We've just gone through ten years of a nationwide debate on women in combat, and the feminist movement told us hell's bells, damn right women in combat. So that's why we created the All American First Cavalry Amazon Battalion here to symbolize the first combat-ready battalion of women in constant states of PMS led by people like Molly Yard. We've been on this for a long time. Now all of a sudden MTV's Rock the Vote's upset that women might be drafted? What is this 20-year-olds go first? 18-year-olds go first and everybody knows that. 20-year-olds are probably the number 1 demographic of interest to them at MTV. So it's a hoax, the whole thing is a hoax. There is draft legislation but Democrats have sponsored it. The last draft that existed in this country was canceled by Richard Nixon, a Republican, and guess who his defense secretary was who authorized it? Donald Rumsfeld. And it's Donald Rumsfeld and everybody else on the Republicans side saying we've got no plans for a draft. In fact, we have more people in the Armed Services today, folks, than we had pre-9/11. There are more people serving in the armed forces today than pre-9/11. This whole notion of a draft is nothing more than late campaign fear tactics aimed at people that don't vote, to try to get 'em to vote, the so-called unlikely voters the, you know, American yute, these young skulls full of mush out there who spend all day long soaking up this garbage on MTV while they're not over at votergasm.org. So you go to votergasm.org and you go out there and get sex if you vote on election night. Then you go to Rock the Vote and make sure that you don't get drafted by voting for the right guy before you go out and get sex for it over at votergasm.org.

This is how the youth of America are being campaigned to. Then you got Kerry on Good Morning America today saying that the Bush campaign's out there trying to scare American parents! It's a 180 degrees out of phase.

All right, folks, I want to go back to this fraudulent draft story again. Dan Rather knows better than this. There is no plan by the Republicans to institute the draft. There never has been a plan by the Republicans to institute the draft. MTV's Rock the Vote and CBS News are utilizing phony, fraudulently kook e-mail. I mean, they're relying on sources I wouldn't even rely on, on this program, that nobody would rely on, because we've learned over the years that you believe 94% of what you get in e-mail is fraudulent anyway, or kooky, or wrong, and yet Dan Rather has gone with that and based an entire story on CBS News about the fact the Republicans want to reinstate the draft. There is reinstate the draft legislation, it's been proposed by two Democrats, Charles Rangel and Ernest Hollings, and it's not even for the purpose of reinstating the draft. It's to scare young people into thinking that Bush is going to draft 'em and send 'em off to die, and to scare their parents into doing the same thing so that they will register and go out and vote in this election, which they don't normally do. And the reason they're doing that is because they know Kerry is pretty much down to having no more than a wing and a prayer winning this thing and if they don't get people who haven't voted before to go out and finally vote, they're thinking it's pretty much over and hopeless. And the fact that Dan Rather would be complicit in this is something that is not surprising at all.

I want you to hear how Dan Rather dealt with this on the CBS Evening News on Tuesday. We've got two sound bites. He went out and found a mother. He went out and found a mother who's -- (crying) -- I don't want my son to die -- (crying). She's a fraud, she's an anti-war, anti-draft activist, she's not just some woman that they found walking down the street coming out of Wal-Mart that they thrust a microphone. Her name is Beverly Cocco. She's a crossing guard for children. Dan Rather says, (doing impression) "It's no secret the old volunteer U.S. military, especially the Army, Marines, and many Reserve units are stretched thin in Iraq and Afghanistan. So what about bringing back the draft? Well, a lot of Americans are worried about that. Where do the presidential candidates stand? CBS' Richard Schlessinger tells you in the eye on America election series, what does it mean to you?"

VOICE: Beverly Cocco has spent most of her life protecting children in Philadelphia. She usually worries about other people's kids. But as Election Day approaches, it's her own two grown sons who Beverly is most worried about.

COCCO: I go to bed every night and I pray and I actually get sick to my stomach. I'm very worried, I'm scared, I'm absolutely scared, I'm petrified.

VOICE: Beverly is petrified about a military draft, and she's not alone. Mass e-mails are circulating among worried parents.

RUSH: The report continued.

VOICE: But Beverly is not buying it. She's a Republican, but she's also a single-issue voter.

VOICE: Would you vote for a Democrat?

COCCO: Absolutely. I would vote for Howdy Doody if I thought it would keep my boys home and safe.

VOICE: The machinery for a draft is already in place and the acting director of Selective Service believes he could start drafting people quickly.

VOICE: I think that we could do it in less than six months if we got the call.

VOICE: This time there would be no long deferments for college students, and a lot more people could be eligible for the draft than ever before. Men and women, age 18 to 26 could be called up. Of course, there hasn't been a draft since 1973, but that's not much comfort to Beverly Cocco. So she's keeping a sharp eye on the political traffic. She's a Bush supporter today. And if she doesn't like what she hears between now and November, Beverly could easily cross over.

RUSH: That's just so much poppycock. Beverly Cocco is an anti-war activist and an anti-draft activist. I don't know whether she's pro-Bush or not, but the idea that they just happened upon this woman and she's a static representative of the average thinking in America on the draft is a bogus premise. Typical of CBS. And you even heard in the first report that they're talking about these mass e-mails circulating among worried parents. It's an ad campaign, it's nothing more than a MoveOn.org type of thing. It's being sponsored by a bunch of people who are trying to get kids in this country all scared to death. Well, I'd take Votergasm.org over this. Votergasm.org is more responsible than this. But the point is, there's nothing to it. The only pro-draft legislation out there is by Democrats.

It's nothing more than an attempt to generate this kind of stuff, and then you get your willing accomplice, Dan Rather, on CBS to run with it and try to make it out to be a news story that it isn't, trying to make it out to be a Bush administration proposal. You go get the director of the Selective Service who has to answer questions, "If you got the order, how long would it take?" He's got no choice, Selective Service is always in existence, you never know when there's going to be an emergency, but the only plan to bring back the draft has been offered by Democrats! As this guy said, the draft ended in '73. Nixon ended it! Rumsfeld, secretary of defense, Rumsfeld, current secretary of defense, we're not going to do the draft. There are more armed forces in uniform today than there were pre-9/11. So don't fall for this, folks, it's just a late-game election trick born of desperation because it means that Democrats and the Kerry campaign know, that among the current universe of voters, they don't have a chance.

Democrats Trying to Reinstate the Draft

Companion Bills in the House and Senate

A mandatory draft for young men and women (ages 18 to 26) starting in February 2005 is something that everyone should know about. This plan to reinstate the draft literally effects everyone since we all have or know children that will be drafted if either of these bills passes.

The Democrats in the house and senate have quietly introduced companion bills (H.R.163 and S.89) which will time the program’s initiation so the draft can begin as early as February 2005 just after the inauguration. The Democrats in the house and senate are quietly trying to get these bills passed now while the public’s attention is on the elections. We must act now to prevent them from succeeding now or during the lame duck session after the November election.

Please send this note on to all the parents and teachers you know, and all the aunts, uncles, grandparents, godparents. ... And let your children know -- it’s their future, and they can be a powerful voice for change! This legislation is called HR 163 and can be found in detail at this website: http://thomas.loc.gov/.

Just enter “HR 163” or “S 89” and click search which will bring up the bill for you to read. Each bill is less than two pages long. If either bill passes, all men and all women from ages 18 to 26 will be drafted for military action. In addition, college will no longer be an option for avoid-ing the draft. In addition, John Kerry has indicated he would sign an agreement with Canada which will no longer permit anyone attempting to dodge the draft to remain within its borders. This bill also includes the extension of military service for all those that are currently active. If you go to the selective service web site and read their 2004 Goals, you will see that the reasoning for this is to increase the size of the military in case of terrorism.

All the sponsors of these bills are Democrats. John Kerry and John Edwards have repeatedly said we need more troops in Iraq to achieve victory there. Neither John Kerry nor John Edwards has come out against S89. The logical conclusion is they both support that bill and want to use the draft if elected. The only way to prevent the reactivation of the draft is to vote against the Kerry-Edwards ticket and against Democrats who are trying to force votes on S89 and HR163.

The reverse contain John Kerry’s Plan for National Service which might better be called National Servitude for all of our children. His National Service plan is why he wants S89 and HR163 passed.

If You Love Your Children, Read This!!!!

Highlights of John Kerry’s National Service Plan

“Service for College” Initiative

As President, John Kerry will call on young people to help strengthen America’s security and address unmet community needs. In return, he believes we should offer young Americans and their families the opportunity for a college education. A Kerry Administration will offer Amer-icans the chance to earn the equivalent of their state’s four-year public college tuition in exchange for two years of service. If service members decide not to go to college, their award can be used for job training or to help start a business. John Kerry will set a national goal of half a million young people serving their nation every year within ten years. President Bush promised to double AmeriCorps, but he broke that promise and let Congressional Republicans cut the program in half. John Kerry believes we need to think big and do better and get 500,000 young Americans serving the nation.

High School Service Requirement

As President, John Kerry will ensure that every high school student in America performs community service as a requirement for graduation. This service will be a rite of passage for our nation’s youth and will help foster a lifetime of service. States would design service programs that meet their community and educational needs. However, John Kerry does not believe in unfunded mandates. No state would be obligated to implement a service requirement if the fed-eral government does not live up to its obligation to fund the program.

A Summer of Service for Teenagers

Thirteen to seventeen year olds are too old for child care and too young for many summer jobs. John Kerry believes we should tap their energy and idealism through a summer of service learning. Supervised by AmeriCorps members, these young people could help out in nursing homes, clean up local areas, or teach seniors computer skills. In turn, they would receive a $500 grant to apply to their college or vocational educations down the road. Parents do not want to leave their children alone all summer but most cannot afford other means of care. The Summer of Service program would give parents peace of mind and at the same time build more responsi-ble and dedicated young citizens and stronger, more vibrant communities.

Recruiting More Americans to the Military

The highest form of service is military service. America’s military is having trouble recruiting and is increasingly relying on the reserves for active duty. John Kerry believes we must change that. The complicated missions we face and technologies we use depend on it. In a Kerry Admin-istration, no university that receives federal aid will be allowed to ban the ROTC from their cam-pus, except for religious reasons. And the ROTC scholarship program will be adequately funded so that students can attend the college of their choice. John Kerry will also make modernizing our GI benefits a top priority, because no program has been more successful increasing educational opportunities for veterans while also providing an incentive for the best and brightest to make a career out of military.

I have taken one of the poorly written e-mails I received (from allegedly from an R.N. with a Ph.D. at Yale) and rewrote it with the truth and formatted it so I can include John Kerry's plan for national servitude on the back. I am folding the sheet in half and then in half again so the large font (36 point) words "If you love your children, read this!!!" show up and have been handing it out. People are really upset when they learn (because I have a copy of the bills with me) that the DemonRATS are behind the reinstitution of the draft that many of them are ready to pull the Republican lever on November 2nd.

Oh, yes, I live about 20 miles outside Boston, Massachusetts.

While most people seem to think that George W. Bush is plotting to draft your children after he wins the election this November, it would be wise to consider that there are two bills in Congress seeking to reinstate the draft - both being pushed by leftwing Democrats!

H.R. 163 (14 cosponsors) and S. 89 (no cosponsors) were both introduced by Democrats Charles Rangel (NY) and Ernest Hollings (SC) respectively. The bills were introduced in January 2003 and would require both men and women to either perform mandatory military or civilian service. Both of these pieces of legislation are currently stalled and there's no indication that they are going anywhere anytime soon.

Rush royally dropped the ball on this. Twice today he talked about it, which of course is good, but never mentioned the biggest part - how they altered the "transcript" after the broadcast!

This whole "national service" thing sounds like another term for slavery.

I've always been against forcing children to "volunteer" as a prerequisite for graduating high school.

A message entitled "draft expected to start July 15, 2005" has been going around, as an e-mail chain letter, for months; I have one dated May 5. The e-mail correctly identifies the bill by number (S 89, HR 163). It not only suppresses the fact that the sponsors of the bill are Democrats, but falsely states "The administration is quietly trying to get these bills passed now...".

Now CBS says that people are alarmed by the e-mail, and that's the story, period. Of course CBS well knows the e-mail is a lie, but this is not to be mentioned. Fortunately Shepard Smith on Fox News did point it out.

I would certainly suggest reading the bills, which I think are identical (see thomas.loc.gov). Restoring the military draft is only incidental. The real point is to force "all young persons in the United States, including women" to do forced labor. This approaches the real dream of the leftists - a draft that has absolutely nothing to do with defense.

I think Rangell's draft plan has an affirmative action clause in it to somehow target (r)ich white people, as a sort of reparation (though for what I'm not sure).

There is something about that which maybe isn't so bad. Getting a true representation of the rich and educated trained in the proper use of and respect for assault weapons would be a benefit. That plays right in to one of Chuckie's other pet causes as well. Since he dislikes that members of his own race get them to the extent that they do, this would tend to equalize.

Rush Limbaugh missed the opportunity to point out that it was Jimmy Carter who brought back the requirement to register for the draft AND Carter's 1980 state of the union address clearly indicated he planned to use it!

(some excerpts from the Selective Service System website http://www.sss.gov:

-What is Selective Service registration?
Registration is a way our government keeps a list of names of men from which to draw in case of a national emergency requiring rapid expansion of our Armed Forces. By registering all young men, the Selective Service ensures that a future draft will be fair and equitable.

-Where can I get a Selective Service registration form?
Forms are available at any U.S. post office. You can now register on-line.

-How can I register?
Men 18 through 25 years old can register by completing a form at the post office. Some high schools have a faculty or staff member who serves as a Selective Service Registrar. Most men turning 18 can also register by mail, if they receive a Selective Service form in the mail.

-Why do we need Selective Service if there may never be a draft?
As President Clinton informed Congress in 1994, "Maintaining the Selective Service System and draft registration provides a hedge against unforeseen threats and a relatively low cost 'insurance policy' against our underestimating the maximum level of threat we expect our Armed Forces to face."

-What is the penalty for not registering?
If you do not register, you could be prosecuted and fined up to $250,000 and/or be put in jail for up to five years. Registration is also a requirement to qualify for Federal student aid, job training benefits, and most Federal employment.

-Are illegal alien males required to register?
Yes. All immigrant alien males, other than those admitted on nonimmigrant visas, must register, whether or not they have a green card.

-When was registration reinstated?
President Jimmy Carter reinstated the Selective Service registration requirement in the summer of 1980.

-What if I'm a U.S. citizen living or visiting out of the U.S. when it's time to register?
Visit the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate. They will help you register.
