This is about what I expected, except for the high percentage of questions tailor made for Kerry. Most of them. When all is said and done this was supposed to be Kerry's night to shine. He didn't.

I thought President Bush was supposed to have the final statement.

Since, then Kerry has added nothing meaningful to the dialogue and blew it on the bilateral talks with NK.

When Bush was repeating programmed talking points, he was terrible. He sounded defensive (and occasionally even whiny), and he repeated himself too much.

When he was just talking, he was terrific, as usual.

No programmed talking points for the next debate. Let Bush be Bush.

But I don't think Kerry did much better. He's an arrogant creep, and all the spray-on tan in Malibu can't cover it up.

I have to admit that I turned off the debates within minutes because of the SOFTBALL questions Kerry was getting!

Bush could be setting up Kerry to have him for lunch in the next debates. And someone reminded us that Reagan lost the first debate with Mondale. Ah. Bush is walking in Reagan's footsteps.

No one has fallen on their face, no one has obviously won. Both candidates are portraying themselves effectively (except the public likes Bush, but not Kerry). Kerry has made great anti-war points, but 89% of Bush voters and 23% of Kerry voters support the Iraq operation. Bush has hit two homers and a standup double, which I identified upthread. I give it to Bush 3-1

Agree with most of your comment. Bush has played defense most of the debate, but has played well. His counterpunches have been effective on Kerry and diminished his points.

Holy crap! Did Kerry just suggest we shut down OUR nuclear programs to be consistent with those we are trying to stop? Is he insane or what? TEll me, did I understand Kerry right?

Now, now. Calm down. Senator Spitball pointed out earlier in the debate that he would increase funding for police and firefighters. So if we should suffer a nuclear attack there will be plenty of police and firefighters on hand.

Unless they happened to get nuked. But what are the odds?
