Kerry Aide Threatens to Remove 'Time Up' Lights for Debate

Democratic candidate John Kerry's campaign demanded Thursday that the lights signaling when a speaker's time has expired during debates with President Bush be removed from the lecterns because they are distracting, but the commission hosting the debates refused.

An angry exchange between representatives of the Kerry campaign and the Commission on Presidential Debates took place just hours before the candidates were to meet at the University of Miami for the first of three debates, The Associated Press learned.

Kerry's team threatened to remove the lights when they visit the debate site with Kerry later in the day.

``We'll bring a screwdriver,'' said a Kerry aide familiar with what several people called an angry exchange. The commission did not return a call seeking comment.

The commission placed the lights on the lecterns in clear view of the television audience and those in the auditorium.

An agreement between the Kerry and Bush campaigns specified that timing lights ``shall be placed such that they are visible to the debate audiences and television viewers.''

However, Kerry's team contended that the agreement doesn't specifically say where the lights should be placed, and it said putting them on the lecterns creates a distraction.

The Bush team pushed for the lights in negotiations with Kerry advisers.

The commission is a nonprofit and nonpartisan corporation that has sponsored all the presidential debates since 1988.

Kerry cannot have the time limit light visible to himself or to anyone else. Kerry is a pseudointellectual and speaks relentlessly, qualifying every conclusion with so many conditions that he has no final positions on anything.

Liberals call it "nuance" and sniff derisively at dolts who cannot comprehend it. But it is in the final analysis merely fluffy fecal frappe.

If a time is imposed on his meaningless ramblings, Kerry will get nervous and slip, perhaps accidentally actually reaching a conclusion about something. Kerry is too devious to be able to reach a bottom line honestly, so a halt midway through a dishonest convolution can end up anywhere. It might be interesting watching how chaos and randomicity generate new Kerry conclusions.

...Oh come on... have some fun with it! He should have said, "We'll bring a hammer". :-)

and a sickle???????...

Hahaha.

They said they'd bring a screwdriver. They didn't say they actually know how to use one.

I wish, wish that Bush would call Kerry when Kerry ignores the rules the first time.

"Gee John, you agreed to the rules and now you are flip flopping on them".

Baker let it out that they only wanted two debates. Kerry is so desperate he wanted three hoping he could score some points along the way.

He got three but the first debate on foreign policy will put this election away once and for all.

Not sure who negotiated for Kerry but clearly they had no idea they were being sandbagged from the gitgo.

The Senate uses the light system ALL the time. Kerry should be familiar with that process.<P.However, he's been AWOL so long he's probably forgotten all about the lights.

We knew he couldn't live within fiscal budgetary constraints, now he's saying he can't meet time constraints either?

Why does this remind me of Captain Picard?

Kerry suddenly shouting: "There...are...FOUR...lights!"

I thought Patrick Stewart was channeling William Shatner in that scene...

Oh yes, the media hacks are all saying that height means victory.

Well Ford was taller than Carter and Mondull was taller than Reagan so their entire premise if full of it.....as usual.

I don't think you can find a journalist/commentator more in the bag for for Kerry than Mara Liasson. And when Dean was winning she was all in the bag for Dean.

She actually tried to say that Dean's scream was caused by his rolling up his sleeves to high, causing them to constrict his blood flow!

Who on the planet would believe such a thing and how in the hell did she think such an excuse would fly?

I guess with a time limit in place, he can't remind us that he was in Vietnam before every answer.

qualifying every conclusion with so many conditions that he has no final positions on anything.

I can't remember the question, but Kerry was asked something and his answer was, 'maybe I would have. Yes, I might have."

What the hell does that mean?

ROFL! Perfect. :)

I guess with a time limit in place, he can't remind us that he was in Vietnam before every answer.

The first time Kerry says, "that question reminds me of a time back in Vietnam..." the debate is over.

He will immediately turn off most of the viewing audience.

And he can not stop himself from doing it. He even pointed to the Mississippi river at a campaign stop and told a story of how the river reminded him of Vietnam.
