Sanchez says no to debate with Coronado
By Courtney Paquette,
The Hill
September 28, 2004
Rep. Loretta Sanchez (D-Calif.) is accusing her Republican challenger, Alexandria Coronado, of attempting to influence unfairly a recently canceled debate and is now refusing to reschedule it.
Robert MacLeod, general manager of the Orange County Deputy Sheriffs Association, said his group canceled the debate scheduled for last Saturday because it had received a number of e-mails that indicated a large number of people were planning to come very early, take all the seats and change the direction of the debate from a discussion on law enforcement and public safety to a forum on other issues, such as same-sex marriage and abortion.
He said the e-mails were forwarded to the association by members of police groups and by some who were undoubtedly Sanchez supporters. MacLeod said some of the e-mails intercepted were from Coronado supporters.
She had her chance, and she didnt know how to handle it, Sanchez said, adding that a win for the Democrats in the district is a forgone conclusion.
Coronado denied the charge that her supporters planned to change the direction of the debate, which was to be held at the Santa Ana Police Officers Association.
But because the Orange County Deputy Sheriffs Association, as well as the Santa Ana Police Officers Association, endorsed Sanchez before the debate, Coronado argued, the debate was not on neutral ground, and she said her campaign planned to have more than 300 supporters present.
Sanchezs campaign had complete control over the debate. They picked the moderator. They had control over the questions, Coronado said. That someone was trying to change the direction of the debate or the agenda, thats just a bunch of baloney.
Coronado said the Sanchez campaign would not discuss the terms of the debate beforehand.
Shes ruled them out because she knows Ill win. Shes afraid of me, said Coronado.
Coronado said she and her supporters would demand that Sanchez debate her in a fair and open public forum. Rep. Christopher Cox (R-Calif.), who represents the 48th District, has offered grounds on Chapman University.
Coronado held a rally in place of the debates Saturday night, and her campaign manager said more than 100 supporters attended.
Sanchez defeated former Republican Congressman Bob Dornan for the House seat in the traditionally Republican Orange County district in 1996 and has held it ever since. As of June 30, Sanchez had raised more than $1 million and Coronado had raised $180,847.
Sanchez is favored to reclaim the seat, but Coronado has made a push in the past month that includes an appearance on Fox News and an aggressive grassroots effort.
Coronado is president of the California School Boards Leadership Council and was the first Hispanic woman to be elected to the Anaheim Union High School District Board of Trustees.
Sanchez, in response to Coronados accusations that the original debate would not have been on neutral ground, said Coronado should not have accepted if she didnt like the terms.
Shes the one who accepted, Sanchez said. She should have thought it through.
The 47th is one of the only potentially competitive districts in the state. Democrats have talked wistfully of winning the district held by Rep. Mary Bono (R) when the seat opens up; Bono has given no indication she plans to step down. And Republicans continue to have high hopes for the seat held by Rep. Adam Schiff (D), who represents a district north and east of downtown Los Angeles.
More than any other state, perhaps, California is notorious for its politically calibrated redistricting, which protects incumbents and makes party pick-ups nearly impossible. While a movement is afoot to change the way redistricting takes place in the state capital, Sacramento, reform is unlikely to happen for years.
For now, the Democrats have 33 House seats and the Republicans 20. Few on either side of the aisle believe that split will shift Nov. 2.
IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO HELP DR. ALEXANDRIA CORONADO
SHE COULD CERTAINLY USE YOUR HELP!

Why can ONLY Rudy the RINO beat Hillary? Most GOP governors out there can easily defeat her.
Rudy is the only one besides Arnold with a name out there....
you dont think the MSM will go gaga over Hillary and not even bother with the Republican candidate, especially one that isnt already in the White House?
The MSM is dead. If you choose your candiates based on who the MSM loves 1. You should have supported McCain in 2000 and 2. This site may not be for you.
I bet she had to cough up plenty to get rid of him so she can discover the new oppportunities for her inner self.
I hope he gets permanent monthly alimony, the house, the Mexican gardener, the taco recipes and the chihuahua.

alrighty then....next!!!
there would be a large women vote for Hillary - much of it "hidden", especially single young women who would otherwise not have voted, who would vote for her because of the "chicness" of electing the first women president. especially if she were running against a republican that no one ever heard of.
don't underestimate her.
I don't believe the BS that ONLY Rudy the RINO can beat Hillary. Anyone who believes that should take a look at some beachfront property I have for sale in Kansas.
we haven't groomed any conservatives for 2008, we have to face up to that. our party stands for nothing if it allows Hillary to walk into the white house because we nominate an unelectable conservative candidate - not because he's a conservative, but because he doesn't have any name recognition or star power.
Itch.
Wonder if she has a CCW... yet?
Hey, Smithee, I emailed you on 9/21 did you get it?
I didn't hear from you???

"Wonder why she used her maiden name and not her married?"
Probably a proud member of N.O.W.
Probably for the mexican vote.
I heard Stephen Brixey is gay. Is it possible that he's moved in with his boyfriend? No joke, I'd like to see somebody investigate that. I also wouldn't be surprised if their marriage was just an arrangement anyway.
