I'll be live-blogging the Presidential debate tomorrow night; Deacon and the Trunk may be as well. Some time during the evening, President Bush will be asked about his plan, or maybe his exit strategy, in regard to Iraq. Bush doesn't talk like Winston Churchill, of course, but in my view, he needs to echo Churchill's words in the first speech he gave to the House of Commons after assuming office as Prime Minister in 1940:
You ask, what is our policy? I say it is to wage war by land, sea, and air. War with all our might and with all the strength God has given us, and to wage war against a monstrous tyranny never surpassed in the dark and lamentable catalogue of human crime. That is our policy.
You ask, what is our aim? I can answer in one word. It is victory. Victory at all costs - Victory in spite of all terrors - Victory, however long and hard the road may be, for without victory there is no survival.
A clear majority of Americans understands that we are in a war for our survival, and will follow a leader whose commitment to victory in that war is unwavering and tireless. Bush's task tomorrow is to make clear that he is that leader, and John Kerry is not.
You'll hear what is scripted, and has been agreed upon.
Kerry is hitching his wagon to this notion that Iraq was terrorist-free before the invasion, and that there were no links to Al Qaeda. And, of course, that the President misled.
I hope Bush drives a truck through this gaping hole of logic.
Unfortunately, Kerry is the kind of guy who could lose every point in the debate and still come out looking like he won.
We have seen the goal of our enemies, and that goal was implemented in Afghanistan. The world our enemies would establish is based on absolute power in the hands of a few psychopaths, the enslavement of women, the eradication of art and music, the destruction of all the books and moments cultural history, and the complete absense of personal liberty.
And that's just the democrats.
well said!
