NFL concedes mistakes by officials (in Redskins-Cowboys game)
Washington Times ^ | Sep. 29, 04 | Mark Zuckerman

Washington Redskins coach Joe Gibbs yesterday expressed displeasure with a pair of officiating calls in Washington's 21-18 loss to the Dallas Cowboys on Monday night, and the NFL responded by conceding its crew made two mistakes. A club source said league officials reviewed the two plays in question — a pass interference call on Redskins cornerback Walt Harris in the first quarter, and a no-call on a deep pass to Rod Gardner in the fourth quarter. The league conceded error in both cases.

Ah, but we won. Indeed, have won in the last dozen or so confrontations with the 'skins.

Everyone gets bad calls. Luck is part of the game. It wasn't the 'skins lucky night, I guess.

Good game, though. Next time might want to watch those timeouts.

Maybe every bad call against Dallas can be reviewed as well and we can asterik the other teams. Maybe a double asterik can deliniate an injury duing the bad call.

Hell, let's just rewrite the entire rule book.

Ya win some, ya lose some.... Luck is part of the game.

We? What position do you play? Tell us about last year's playoffs

:-)

Maybe. But if not for the horrible calls - Washington most likely scores first - a different game. When the Refs basically carried the Boys down the field into the end zone - it totally changed the game and it was never the same. The Ref's stole a touchdown from the Redskins - if that bad call had not happened Dallas would be the loser right now (of course if that was all that happened in the game I would have a stronger point). Dallas was very beatable but the Redskins offense is not ready for prime time yet (not to mention Arrington was not playing). Redskins could have won the game despite some of the worst calls in football history but alas it did not happen.

The good news is on December 26 the Redskins have another chance to humiliate Dallas AT HOME and maybe mess up the play-offs for the boys...or Washington could play dead again. Washington now has the "Ref's admit they hosed the game" Mojo.

I play rabid fan. Since I was 13. Use to coast my bike down to CLC to watch them in Summer camp in Thousand Oaks. Got ran over by Mercury Morris in his rookie year. Played Powder Puff in high school. Linebacker defense, running back offense.

Any Sunday there can be a bad call. It wasn't just this game. I've seen some hideous calls that cost Super Bowls. Like I said, luck is part of the game.

The good news is we might have the same refs on Dec. 26th! Certainly will have the same amount of timeouts...... :)

OH PLEASE. Nobody is buying this. Those were some of the worst calls in football history.

Dallas fumbles and Washington has the ball on the 16 yard line - but another official decides to overrule that and give the ball back to the boys

(later in that same drive when Dallas was stopped)

Dallas' flat offense stopped on the 40 turns into first and ten on the one based on one of the worst calls in football history - the offensive player was guilty.

later

In the End zone the boys mug the receiver so he cannot catch the ball (it would have been a touchdown or at least first and ten on the one)

This was not luck, this was officials that acted like fans.

This was a tainted victory and tainted loss (although on the books a win is a win)

But before I sound like a complete loon, if that was all that happened I would have a stronger point. The Redskins could have won despite the horrible calls but they didn't (BTW: calls are not luck, some clown makes the call - it is not happenstance)

You can't spin this into a clean win but a win is a win. Since the officials admitted the error (something they do not do all that often) - this game will always be questioned and that is too bad.

The best Washington or Dallas can hope for is wild card (although if I were to bet on this right now, I would go with neither team making the playoffs). Things change so who knows. It is bad enough to lose to a rival but when the loss is tainted - that makes it even worse.

But like you said - it is all part of the game (just as Dan Rather attacking Bush with forged documents is all part of the game)

Spoken like a person who's team benefited from the bad calls.

...and could you stop bringing up the time outs issue, you are ruining my diatribe.

In 2001, the 'Skins literally screwed themselves again by opting to run in instead of kick the extra point. The Redskins had a chance to score late in the first half, having marched to the Dallas 37. But instead of calling on place kicker Conway for a 53-yard field goal attempt -- or trying a short pass to shorten the distance Schottenheimer called for a touchdown pass, which fell incomplete. A second throw was also incomplete.

This time the 'Skins, in an attempt to be tricky (and I liked the creativity of the play), decided to go without huddle causing mass confusion on their line and a penalty to the Cowboys once AND the erosion of their timeouts (picture Jim Carrey in Bruce Almighty saying "ERODING ERODING ERODING!!). That cost them the game. Sorry to ruin your tirade. BUT, like the democrats, personal responsibility is a factor.

Sometimes it's bad luck. Sometimes it's bad decisions. Sometimes it's both.

As for the Cowboys... Well, let's talk about that game against the Giants. I'm still riled about the 26-yard pass interference call against Kevin Smith. The call set up Charles Way's 3-yard touchdown run that made it 20-9 with 6:18 left.

Giants receiver Chris Calloway, not Smith, should have been flagged for interference.

The guy grabbed the back of Smith's jersey when Smith was reaching for the ball. Sometimes I think they forget who holds who, that's definitely what happened.

Then there was that stupid hands-to-the-face penalty against tackle Erik Williams with the Cowboys perched at the Giants' 2. The call forced Dallas to settle for a Richie Cunningham field goal.

The guy placed his head there - Erik didn't reach up and grab his face mask. There was no intent there ... It's just one of those calls at the wrong time. And how do I know so much about that game? I had $100 on it.

So, be nice. Or I'll give you a timeout.

*snicker*

(hmmm...hos or ho's. Tough technical question)

I think the correct plural of "ho" is "hoes." :)

Carter was from the South.

Things have changed a lot in 20 years. You are probably right about the red-state blue-state dichotomy as pertains to the Cowboys, although Rams, Titans, and Chiefs fans may take exception :-)

It's one thing for me to recall a game that happened two days ago but you are giving me play-by-plays of games that happened three years ago. At what point does being a fan turn into a neurosis? I can sum up America’s hatred for the Cowboys in two words “American’s Team” – any team so arrogant as to call themselves American’s Team (especially one from Texas) is asking for trouble.

Cowboys have put together some really good teams (although I have not respected them since they screwed Landry) – but the Cowboys are also known as the team full of criminals, coke-heads and hot dogs (maybe that is what they mean by America’s Team – sorta like America’s Most Wanted) and the worst of it all is they keep beating the team I root for.

Speaking of the Washington/Dallas rivalry – there isn’t one (at least not right now). Dallas currently beats the Redskins like John Bonham’s snare drum. Back in the 90’s there was a year Dallas lost like all games but one – they beat the Redskins – in a year when the Redskin were making a play for the playoffs – like I said, Dallas has been beating Washington like Gene Krupa’s tom-toms. I have been a Redskin fan since the late 60’s. There was a Dallas-Washington rivalry in the early 1970’s and the 1980’s. But right now all Washington is - is a soft spot in Dallas’ schedule. Things change and when they do I will enjoy it when Washington makes Dallas their B!tch (figuratively speaking). But in the meantime – the ref’s handed Monday’s night’s game to the Cowboys!

Face it. The Cowboys are a red state team. The Redskins are a blue state team. It will always be this way.

1. The home of the Redskins (their offices and practice facility) is in a red state.

2. The Redskin's stadium is in Maryland, if we play our cards right Maryland might be a red state.

3. The only connection the Washington Redskins have with Washington is that it is their first name.

That's it. You get a timeout. Might need it for the next game....hehehehehe....

I've been watching the Cowboys since the 60's too. I cried when Landry left. Literally cried.

"America's Team" ... They didn't call THEMSELVES that. The fans gave them that name. Wanna hear what name we gave the 'skins? Starts with "fore".

"At what point does being a fan turn into a neurosis?"

HAHAHAahahaha... I don't know, my friend, but I think you and I are there....

Great game. Better luck next time.

As a Marylander, this make me very happy although I would have been much happier if the officials has not handed Monday night's game to Dallas (did I just think that or did I type it)

I will be THRILLED if California turns Red. Almost as thrilled as I was to watch the 'skins take all their timeouts ....
