NFL concedes mistakes by officials (in Redskins-Cowboys game)

Washington Redskins coach Joe Gibbs yesterday expressed displeasure with a pair of officiating calls in Washington's 21-18 loss to the Dallas Cowboys on Monday night, and the NFL responded by conceding its crew made two mistakes. A club source said league officials reviewed the two plays in question — a pass interference call on Redskins cornerback Walt Harris in the first quarter, and a no-call on a deep pass to Rod Gardner in the fourth quarter. The league conceded error in both cases.

So they can't go back and replay the game. But I think we both would agree that the NFL ref's need to get a new eye doctor.

That's funny. I watched the game and thought both calls were right. In both instances, there was contact. To me, the difference was that the 1st (called) pass interference impacted the receiver far more than the 2nd (not called) pass interference.

Uh, no, watch the film and you'll see the Dallas WR pushing off on Harris in the first bad call, as pointed out by Al Micheals and John Madden. In the second bad (non-)call, Redskins WR Rod Gardner had a step on his man in the end zone, and as the ball was coming down the Dallas CB grabbed his shoulder pad and held him back. Gardner's jersey was literally pulled off of his shoulder. And this all happened right in front of a referee who stood and did nothing. Again, the film and Michaels and Madden pointed this out quite clearly.

While Petronski is correct that not much will be done for this specific game.................The NFL does keep a running total of 'mistakes' and appeals during the course of the season. Referees with a lot of mistakes next to their name are not allowed to officiate during the playoffs.

That's pretty much why I hate Parcells. The way he left the Pats (not actually one of my favorite teams) was reprehensible, dishonorable and disgusting.

And I'm still of the opinion that he tanked it in that Superbowl, he'd spent all year bitching and moaning that he wanted to be GM too and he'd been given terrible players. Well in the world of football it's CW that great coaches can make poor teams over achieve, but somewhere in there we consider winning the Superbowl to be more than over achievement, ie poor teams that are well coached can make it TO the Superbowl but they don't win it. Because ofthat general thinking throughout the league had the Pats won that year then that would have disproven all of Parcells complaints.

And even if he didn't tank it, he still acted like an all around scumbag through that whole playoff run up through going straight from New Orleans to New York to interview for his job with the Jets. Sleazy in every possible way, and unbecoming to football. Then his campaigning to get inducted into the hall AND come out of retirement in the same year was just sickening. The guy is a punk and bad for the game.

I am not exactly sure how you can make the claim that Bill Parcells is a better coach in light of the fact that Gibbs has three Superbowl rings to Parcells one. None the less having these two guys coaching on the opposite sides of field is fantastic. Gibbs is off to his usual start and he will do whatever he can to win. The biggest worry is that he will burn out again, which is something Steve Spurrier never worried about.

You're wrong. I've got it recorded on my Dish DVR and it is extremely plain and clear. It isn't even debatable. If it ewre otherwise, the NFL would never have admitted the errors.
