No Doubt, CentCom Leader Says -- Iraq Had WMDs

The former deputy commander of U.S. Central Command says the U.S. had very credible intelligence that Iraq indeed possessed weapons of mass destruction prior to last year's invasion by coalition forces.

In both October 2002 and January 2003, Senator John Kerry stated his belief -- and backed it up with votes in favor of invading Iraq -- that Saddam Hussein possessed weapons of mass destruction (WMDs) and represented a real threat to America's security. Now candidate Kerry and his supporters are criticizing President Bush's decision to invade Iraq, based on the premise that no WMDs have been found there.

"We had, let's just say, very, very, very credible [intelligence] from multiple sources that said there were weapons of mass destruction in Iraq," the general says. "And about two days before the war, a large number of the senior Iraqis went to Syria with billions of dollars and -- quote -- 'suitcases with weapons of mass destruction in them' -- being biological weapons,", said Marine Lt Gen Michael DeLong, (Ret) former Deputy Commander of US Central Command.

So why is Bush playing dumb on the issue?
I have a feeling it may be because he would rather have people think he was wrong and WMDs aren't a threat than for people to know that they are out there in the hands of the Syrians who could pass them to terrorists.

Well then, find the damn things before November 2nd.

While it might be nice, according to the polls it would appear not to matter all that much. We can afford to pretend that the WMDs don't exist for a bit longer.

Better, really, to let us have more time to get our arms around the problem fully before we let on to the AQ types that they could have been cruising the desert of Iraq, or the Bekaa valley in Syria looking for Sarin shells before we found them and made them useless, in one of many ways.

Just my opinion.

Not playing dumb.

If you have a country like Iraq that is essentially a munitions dump surrounded by millions of square miles of country... it will literally take years to locate and work through the thousands of ammo dumps, and catalog and record whatever was found and destroyed.

Wouldn't it make your job somewhat easier if you announced to the world that there were no chemical weapons to be found? Maybe some AQ types would buy it, and not bother trying to get ahead of you as you search them out?

Just a thought.
