The Effrontery of Obama's Religious Crusade
The Illinois Leader ^ | September 27, 2004 | Andrew Longman

Posted on 09/28/2004 4:01:15 PM PDT by HallowThisGround

Historically the public at large has always know they were free to believe whatever they liked and that public law in the United States was special and successful precisely because we based our social understanding on Christianity. That oldest and best, triedest and true form of conduct for a mass of people created the most prosperous society in history.

Was this vision of public understanding exclusionary? No, people from all over the world came to our shores happily as guests and neighbors.

Did it protect the minority? Better than any system in any country in history ever. Yet in far off left Obamaland, the home of the lien and the slave, Christians are to be excluded from public life and innocent infants are to be excluded from the protective penumbra of law.

Do we accept that our laws ought to be derived from something moral since law is going to be derived from something? And if campaigns may permissibly focus on morality, isn't it more than a bit silly to require them to be areligious at the same time?

That second is exactly what liberal-naturalists desire of the public: morality without religion or religion without morality. To them either is acceptable; both are the soul of their religious agenda.

Ah! Magnificent Keyes is out there doing the heretical: trying to persuade that a revival of intelligent Christian ideas ought form the basis for American public life just they did for hundreds of years...usurping the ruling oligarchy of banal liberal naturalism and making Dan Rather mad!

Oh, preach that sawdust trail Dr. Keyes and repent not of it.

It boils down simply: which is vision is best? Some cobbled together clap-trap invented by the courts or the Rock of Our Salvation that built Western Civilization?

I hear what you are saying. But the media does alot to make a person like Alan out to be a "whackjob" because he speaks on principles which go to the heart of the problem in the system these days.

Yes, Alan could do better to present himself with better "sound bites", but the beauty of the man is that he doesn't back down when the issue is of foundational importance. This should be applauded (as you have done) and supported (as you have seemingly not).

More preaching. The reason Keyes is behind is because he preaches. He does not seek to persuade.

Voters do not want their leaders to preach at them and declare them moral incompetents.

If I lived in IL, I'd vote for him. However, I'd apparently be outnumbered 3 or 4 to 1.

If you want to be ideologically pure, run on a 3rd party ticket nobody has ever heard of or voted for.

A major reason the Left will lose this election.

As far as I know Keyes has never actually chopped anybody up with a broadsword, but your analogy is not that far off.

Bravery and eloquence without common sense and humility is a scary combination.

Now I would say partly that we'd better prepare ourselves for that persecution, that we'd better go back to those parts of scripture where Christ makes it clear that this is part of our Christian vocation. But I also believe that we should not sit back and simply accept this fate as inevitable -- not when we know that this whole structure of persecution will be based upon a lie. --Keys

Obama and Keys are both nuts. Why is this country stuck in the middle between guys like this?

Big mistake. I'd make a great dictator, but a really lousy senator.

It would seem that the scoffers at morality and the historical ideals that made this free republic great have taken over our beloved FR.

Getting hard to tell them from Democrats.

I think Keyes had about as much chance of winning this as Lurch does of beating GW. He got in late, underfunded, was immediately tagged a carpet bagger and never really got any traction against the rats upcoming rock start Alabama the great.

I find it rather disturbing as well to hear the comments from those who have posted, EternalVigilance.

It would seem that the scoffers at morality and the historical ideals that made this free republic great have taken over our beloved FR.

My retort to this is that in general, libertarianism has turned a scoffing eye on moral opinion. I consider myself a Christian libertarian because I believe government should allow me to make my own social, political, economic and moral choices. But government should also protect individuals from other individuals who might harm them. Mocking moral choices in government and law and those who espouse that we as a society should make them seems more like anarchy than freedom.

I take the comments above to mean that those who preach "morality" despise civil liberty as some libertarians do. Libertarianism of the type espoused by Ayn Rand and others leans more to that of the "Civil Libertarian" which espouses a doctrine accepting of the hedonist. I hate to be too harsh, but to call Alan Keyes a "whackjob" demeans the political debate to the level which you rightly attribute to the Democrats.

Wake Up, Illinois!

Barack Obama IS the most liberal member of the Illinois Legislature.

If elected, Barack Obama WOULD BE the most liberal member of the United States Senate; to the Left of Hillary Clinton, Ted Kennedy and John Kerry.

But you have a great alternative. Ambassador Alan Keyes is a seasoned statesman. He is highly respected on Capitol Hill. When he speaks, Senators and Congressmen listen.

Alan Keyes has worked for years to build a national constituency of conscience which will help make him a highly effective advocate for the State and the people of Illinois in the Senate.

Alan Keyes will be a force to be reckoned with in the areas of fundamental tax reform, the elimination of government waste, and in promoting economic prosperity and job growth.

Alan Keyes is a highly regarded expert on foreign policy, defense, security and intelligence matters. He is known and respected by world leaders. What could be more important in this time when we must fight the worldwide War on Terror?

And finally, Alan Keyes is fully committed to the long-term project of reforming politics and government in Illinois.

Ignore the polls…
Ignore the pundits…
Vote for the best man…

Not a single ballot has yet been cast.
We are still registering Bush/Keyes voters.

With your help,
Alan Keyes can win!

PS...I don't care where you live in the country. If you want to help change Illinois and defeat the socialist Obama, I have something for you to do. EV

I think this is at the root of the anger directed against Keyes by many here. Non serviam.
