Nevada's Ponderosa Ranch has faded into the sunset.
The 570-acre Western theme park overlooking Lake Tahoe and made famous by the 1960s television series "Bonanza" shut its gates Sunday after nearly four decades.

I visited that place, it's a nice memory from another era. It's amazing it lasted this long!
They know Pa'$ gonna be pi$$ed...
This is really sad to see. The ranch was great and a fun tourist attraction for out-of-town guests. I'll have to read the article to find out who bought the property. I'd hate to see it go for development.
'Tis a shame to see it go. I've lived here three years and I never got the chance to go up there....Oh, well....
I liked Hoss and Little Joe. But Nick Barkeley from the Big Valley could womp on that whole family without breaking a sweat.
It is sitting in an area where property values are sky high. I'm not surprised. They'll get some fine money for it.
Don't get me wrong, I'm all for property rights and the developer (Duffield) can do what he wishes with his land but, I think it's sad to see something like the Ponderosa paved over and turned into rows and rows of McMansions on 5,000sq ft lots.
Just my opinion.
Did anyone remember to tell Hop-sing?
Hop Sing saved all his pennies. He's going to turn it into a combination nudist camp and Chinese cooking school.
Owners of the ranch sold it in July to Incline Village resident and developer David Duffield for an undisclosed price.
Shoot, last I had heard about it, the government was still trying to come up with the money.
It's not going to do that. Inside word (I was in Tahoe recently, and visited the Ranch) is that it's going to be inventoried for museum purposes, and used as a museum/retreat for Peoplesoft execudrones.
I just think that if the local gov. came up with $50M but the owners still went with Duffield then Mr. Duffield has to make that investment work for him. Hey, he's a businessman, not a charity.
It would be nice to preserve it as much as possible. I don't see how that can be done while earning a decent return on at least $50M.
Nostalic perspective.
We just visited it in August - just in time.
I could never find the ranch - since they burned the map...
Never been there but spent Thanksgiving 1988 at a friend's cabin on South Lake Tahoe and skied at Kirkwood. Woke up one morning to snow covering EVERYTHING. It was so gorgeous. We drove up there from San Marino in a BLIZZARD and had to put chains on our tires. Our friends had to come out and wipe the snow off the street signs so we could see where to go to get to the cabin, which was actually a big huge two story house. Some cabin. Had a great time. Beautiful country. I stayed home with the kids one day and just played in snow and built a snowman! God's beautiful country there!
