Not only a 5.9, but a shallow 5.9. With a depth of only a hair over a kilometer this thing probably did some serious damage to buildings right around the epicenter.
It looks like it was a 5.0 at 2.5 km followed a few minutes later by a 5.9 at 1.1 km. Praying for those nearby...
(BTW, I didn't feel a thing in Modesto)
These seem to be tapering off now. But there are still aftershocks a couple of times a minute.
I expected to read about it in the mornings paper, but had a hard time finding anything at all about it in the local press. Turns out it was a very local & shallow shaker centered a mile or so away.
I've lived in CA w/earthquakes all my life but found this one to be especially odd.
I've been to Parkfield. There's really nothing there TO damage. The eq study guys down there are probably thrilled with the data they're getting from this. They've been waiting for it.
It's eerie there, btw. Odd sensations there.
The "shallow" hypocentral focus has been revosed to nearly 8km.
