About two weeks ago I woke up to approaching rumbing followed immediately by our house being picked up & dropped once about half a foot. Knocked stuff off shelves, set off car alarms, dogs barking etc.

I expected to read about it in the mornings paper, but had a hard time finding anything at all about it in the local press. Turns out it was a very local & shallow shaker centered a mile or so away.

I've lived in CA w/earthquakes all my life but found this one to be especially odd.

Yeah, those localized quakes are definitely different. I rode one out in Hollister a few years back that was small on paper (3.9 IIRC) but which was only centered a few hundred feet down. The sensation was MUCH more intense than it should have been for that magnitude, and it felt like the ground was bouncing under my feet instead of the usual sliding or rolling motions normally associated with quakes. It was very strange.
