Just felt a quake here in the Fresno area...
Was there just another 6.0 quake in California?
Got a notice of another one...just checking to see if perhaps a duplicate message was sent out on the first one.
"Was there just another 6.0 quake in California?

Not on the map. I don't think so. There was a 4.0 near Parkfield a short time ago.
I didn't feel one, but then I'm in Atlanta. If I ever feel a California earthquake all the way over here, then there are some big problems ...
Wow that was a big one in Parkfield, should be right on the San Andreas fault.
Now I'm glad I left Kollyfawnia!!

Click here to see this same map with a complete list of earthquakes.
You would think the December quake and damage to the same types of buildings in Paso Robles would be enough to get them to retrofit.
There are three main sources of natural seismic (shaking) activity (in descending order of frequency):
(1) earthquakes
(2) volcanoes
(3) meteroite impacts
"just got a call from him - still in Fresno.. he is hitting all the hot spots"
Having lived in Bakersfield at one time, I can assure you, there ARE NO HOT SPOTS in Fresno.
It is not that far fetched to suggest that movement of either the North American Plate or the Pacific Plate could result in both increased earthquake along the San Andreas and movement of magma to the surface in the Cascades. Both volcanoes and earthquakes are a result of tectonic activity.
"They say animals have a sense of impending earthquakes"
Yup. And there's some evidence for it. However, they're not long-range predictors. I think it's just that they feel earth movements too small for we big old humans can feel, so they feel the earthquake before we're aware of it.
I know my cats scurry under things during earthquakes. Now that my wife and I have moved to Minnesota, they'll probably be bored. Still, I can't wait for the first snowfall...just to see how they react to snow for the first time. I'm ready for some serious laughing.
"You would think the December quake and damage to the same types of buildings in Paso Robles would be enough to get them to retrofit."
Not really. The commercial buildings downtown are almost all owned by landlords who do not occupy them. Retrofitting these buildings is usually a multi-million dollar proposition. They won't do it until the building falls down or they're forced to do it.
Rents are already so high in downtown SLO that retrofitting would put the rents way to high for anyone to afford, so the buildings would end up empty.
It's a vicious circle. I'm glad I'm gone. I sold my paid-for house there and fled to the Midwest, where I bought more than twice the house for half the money. Nice feeling.
Not true. I felt quite drowsy after lunch. Now I feel like going to use the restroom.

Earthquakes for Snow? hmmm Your Kitties will proably think they will have one humongous clean liter box!
"Earthquakes for Snow? hmmm Your Kitties will proably think they will have one humongous clean liter box!"
We'll see what they think. I can just picture them stepping outside to use the huge outdoor cat box, then finding out that they sink right into the snow. Besides it'll be really COLD...something they've never experienced. I suspect they will spend the winter indoors.
Aren't they liable for injury or damages if something happened? That in itself should be enough and besides, I thought they made some sort of agreement where they could retrofit "piecemeal" over the course of a few years because of the fact that it is so expensive to do all at once.

That is because they refuse to build any type of housing. Being a college town doesn't help either...

Yeah I just recently moved to the East Coast. I can't believe how cheap housing is here. You can almost sell your car in California and buy a house with the money out here. Depending on what you drive, of course.
"Aren't they liable for injury or damages if something happened?"
I doubt it. I suspect that the commercial landlords have all sorts of disclosures and stuff the renters have to sign that relieves them of responsibility. The buildings all have warning signs on them, which everyone ignores, of course. Phooey on 'em.
There are good reasons for that, my friend.
