Just felt a quake here in the Fresno area...
That was Adak. 5.0 is nothing special. It is the full moon, though.
However, in the "lower 48" the largest earthquakes ever felt were likely to be the series of quakes realted to the New Mmadrid fault zone, between St. Louis and Memphis, which occured in 1811-1812. Three earthquakes (foreshocks, shocks, and/or aftershocks) each measuring between 8.0+/- and 8.5+/-. Accounts of the day suggest that overnight part of the Mississippi River flowed "backward" to fill a quake-related graben (depression) now known as Reelfoot Lake (northwestern Tenn). Earthquakes related features, formed in 1811-12, are still recognizable today.

Strange. Just read this earthquake prediction thread, then saw this thread.
The "shallow" hypocentral focus has been revosed to nearly 8km.
Oh wait.....it's in California? I'm in Florida.
Well, I'm sticking to the game plan. You can't be too rich or too ready.

Hi Oceanperch!
Looks like lunar action is kicking in! Full moon tonite.
You rich folks....
I had my pedicure done this morning, BY ME!
The distance is so far between Mt. St. Helens and Parkfield, that the two sites can not "feel' the stresses caused by the other.
Yeah, next time I need to go back east on business, during winter, I'll just change careers and avoid it.
It has felt like earthquake weather here in San Diego, and remember last May when we were posting on the earthquake perdictions that were suppose to happen before Oct 1st?
Hi MM. Check out post 423. Is that what you're referring to?
"It has felt like earthquake weather here in San Diego, and remember last May when we were posting on the earthquake perdictions that were suppose to happen before Oct 1st?"
No such thing as earthquake weather, missyme. Weather has nothing to do with earthquakes, I'm afraid. They're caused by the forces of plate tectonics. California has earthquakes every day, most too small to feel. It has larger earthquakes quite frequently. Ones like this one today happen several times a year, in different parts of the state.
That said, I see you have posted photos of yourself on your profile page. Thanks!
I am glad to hear that the connection is nil... but the global activity is very interesting... from hurricanes that spawn tornados, Mount St. Helen and now Earthquakes... I thought a really big one would be focusing on the Sierras, not Parkfield.. perhaps, more to come. My son helped us move to Ocala from South Carolina, in between hurricanes, he left to go back to his practice in Seattle only to find the Mount acting up .. yesterday he flew to Fresno to check on an old patient... just got a call from him - still in Fresno.. he is hitting all the hot spots... I did not ask were he was going tomorrow...
Thanks for the info.. I keep reading .. you folks have the best of all news and updates... keep safe ...
Yes and there was one in May also!
I did some preliminary work on dating the ash layers for a proposed Masters thesis over 20 years ago. There remains in the area a relatively shallow, active magma chamber (not nearly as shallow as the one at Yellowstone!), which has been related to the earthquake swarms the occur there from time to time.
It is unlikely that there would be a Cascade-type eruption in the Long Valley caldera region. More likely would be a small, but impressive, cinder-cone eruption.
:-)
As a native Californian it just seems to me we have earthquakes when the weather is kinda balmy and warm, We have never had an earthquake when it's raining? or snowing...
Isn't Zorro cute kinda looks like a penguin...
I wasn't drawing a direct geographical connection between the two events but saying activity in the west is on the increase.
It's San Andreas's fault.
Zorro's great. I have a kitty that looks just like him.
