my daughter and I slept right through it... hubby on 4th floor office felt it and called me.
A friend in Atascadero who sustained a lot of damage in the Paso quake, said this one frightened her.

9/11 proved that.

Even the 1989 quake proved that.

I was visiting someone in Wyoming in the early 90s, and it was -30F at night. That was the coldest I have ever been. You learn to pack food and stuff in case you go sliding off some road in the middle of no where.

Very true. Let's face it, Americans help not only one another in times of crisis but other countries. Were we not in Iran helping out with their earthquakes?

All of the I'd rather be in a hurricane than a quake stuff aside (been in both), we're all in it together and we always help one another out!

As President Bush says: "May God continue to Bless America!"

It didn't matter if I left them unlocked or not. The mechanism itself would freeze and I couldn't open the door until I warmed the inner workings with the hot key. Also, although it wasn't a "bad" part of Idaho, there were the usual numbers of druggies and such that would steal what they could to sell for drugs. So I usually locked up my house and my car.

I was driving when the Loma Prieta hit, a car appeared to be coming at us - thought it was a drunk driver - then realized there was no driver, it was a parked car the quake shifted into the street.

I was driving through Golden Gate Park when that earthquake hit. "Must have a flat tire," I thought. Then realized I was stopped at a stop sign, so it must have been a quake. I had no clue it was a large quake, kept driving to my destination near the golf course at Seacliff. Golfers were still golfing, LOL, and I didn't know the quake was bad until someone pointed over my shoulder to a huge plume of smoke rising from the city.

When I got home to my 8th floor apartment near the ocean, I discovered I had no damage whatsoever (but a very ticked cat!), but my neighbor, with whom I shared a long wall, had her plaster ceiling on the floor, overturned furniture, smashed glass, doors torqued out of square, a huge mess in her place. Funny how some places are spared and some go through hell in a quake.

I have a theory about this... in an earthquake "everyone's" a victim. It plays out in CA DEM legislative bills, perpetually.

I've had my own alternative theory for years. We in California exist alongside the largest ground level fault line in the world, and we are always one minute from death because of it. That fault could let go with a 9+ in 60 seconds, level every major building in California, flood the Bay Area and Central Valleys, and kill 2/3rds of our population. We don't expect that to happen and don't think about it, but it IS always possible, and that knowledge is constantly sitting in the back of our minds. When a big truck rolls past our house and shakes the foundation, most of us catch our breaths for just a moment and wonder "Is this the big one?" We shake our heads when we realize that it's only a truck, and continue on with our lives.

But we know that these types of ongoing issues cause STRESS, and that chronic stress can lead to all kinds of mental disorders.

So here's my theory: The threat of earthquakes stresses Californians out, especially in the Bay Area and LA. That stress causes a certain level of insanity in our citizens, moreso in the Bay Area and LA because of their higher stress level. These insane people naturally vote Democrat, because they share the same deluded view of the world and also regularly suspend their belief in reality to ignore threats to their lives and health. They are offended by Republicans because our normalcy forces them to realize how nuts they actually are ;-)

Some of the coldest mornings I had to endure it got down to -50, although that was unusual. -30 wasn't all that unusual, though. I also had an agreement with a guy who owned a front end loaded so I could get my driveway cleaned out after a major snow storm.

Now I live in the San Francisco Bay Area, and only worry about liberals and earthquakes.

St Helens is still shakin today. 14 more 2+ events at depth of 0.0 to 1.3 Km. Still averaging 1-2 small quakes per minute.

I told a friend TWO days ago CA was due for some big earthquakes soon! Things have been quiet for too long.

I agree. I think we're going to be hit big-time within the decade. Just a hunch.

I lived in California for 59 years and through many large earthquakes. I'm still here. Now I've moved to Minnesota, and I'm a whole lot more worried about getting through my first Winter here. [grin]

I grew up in upstate NY. The key to survival is getting up 20 minutes earlier than in summer. You'll need the time to let your car warm up and to scrape the ice off your windshield. And possibly shovel your tires out.

Don't forget to wear layers!

The rest of you out there who buy in to the stereotype of California and its people are akin to people who only get their news from CNN because it validates their existing agenda: you're willfully ill informed, having too much fun feeling superior!

Thank you for posting that and please feel free to read the "FINALLY" line at the bottom of my home page and continue to sleep well, because "WE KNOW" and they don't.

Until we reached my sister's home I had no idea exactly how bad the quake was either.

We were almost embarrassed to tell worried family that we had one candle fall off the mantle when they phoned from FL and LA.

I think that's normal for any week. Those yellow squares represent really tiny jiggles that go on all the time.

There's a seismograph in the East entrance to the Capitol that I frequently go check. You'd be amazed at how much activity there is routinely.
