The 2000 Election: Where's the Disenfranchisement? --------------------------------------------------------------------------by Joseph Kerry
Senator John Kerry made a fantastic statement while speaking to a predominantly black audience in Indianapolis this past spring. While criticizing the Bush administration for calling "[the Kerry campaign] pessimists for speaking truth to power," Kerry stated: "Don't tell us disenfranchising a million African Americans and stealing their votes is the best we can do. This time, in 2004, not only will every vote count - we're going to make sure that every vote is counted."
This wasn't a new accusation by Kerry. Both he and Edwards made similar statements in the Florida Democratic Convention in December 2003 while campaigning for the Democratic nomination. There, Sen. John Kerry told the crowd, "We know that thousands of people were denied the right to vote." Sen. Edwards called the 2000 election "an incredible miscarriage of justice."
The following is an examination into the issue of disenfranchisement in the 2000 election focusing on the results from Florida.
Immediately following the contested 2000 presidential election, The U.S Commission on Civil Rights (hereinafter 'the Commission') conducted a six-month investigation into Florida's election. The result? The Commission found absolutely no evidence of systematic disenfranchisement of black voters. Furthermore, the investigation found no credible evidence that any Floridians were INTENTIONALLY denied the right to vote in the 2000 election.
The Commission did find, however, that many Florida voters, irrespective of race, spoiled their ballots by MISTAKE. But voter error is not the same thing as "disenfranchisement" and it certainly isn't evidence of any conspiracy or plot to steal or suppress black votes. The Commission also found violations of the Voting Rights Act in three counties. The infractions were that some poll workers had been hostile to Hispanic voters, bilingual assistance hadn't been provided to two Haitian voters and some Hispanic voters had been denied bilingual assistance. None of the offending counties was controlled by Republicans!

Michael Moore lied and ticket sales died.
Kerry sure knows how to pick winning issues. Election 2000, I hope becomes Kerry's major theme.
And what about the military votes that were gleefully thrown into the trash by Socialists in Orange County?
Good article
Great article! It should be noted that the head of the Commissin on Civil Rights that found no deliberate discrimnation was Mary Frances Berry, a Democrat.
Well, for one, my son who is currently in Iraq.
Illinois doesn't mail out the absentee ballots until after Oct. 4th. My son Steve has been in Iraq for more than a year and is scheduled to leave to go to Kuwait the middle of Oct. for two weeks and then to Ft. Lewis, Washington and then home. The ballot will never catch up with him in time.
They have already been told that anything mailed from the states after Oct 1st will not get to them.
Steve's screen name at FR is: "smaagee"

Hey Sarge! Im a Kentucky boy myself! where do you live? I grew up in Ashland and lived in Lexington before moving to FL. There are a few USAR Drill Sergeant units around the Lexington/Richmond area... you should look into it!
By the way, great poem on your profile page!
So why not post the entire article? Click-throughs are nice, but articles have a way of disappearing from remote websites. Best to archive them here.
Welcome to FR.
I had a complaint before about posting an entire article. But as I become more familiar with this site, I find that there are alot of complainers, so I think next time I will. You got my back on that one?
(bowing) Thanks, Drill!
Louisville/Shively area, here. Going back on Active Duty this week, as a Guard Recruiter. Some of our guys got tapped, and I'm taking one of their slots.
Unfortunately, too many blacks are all too eager to believe this kind of nonsense.
One of the first things I'm doing is the R&R school at Pine Bluff next month. Two years ago, I did the Retention Course at Knox. So I'll have a little leg up, I hope.
One thing that's been impressed upon me is, there are people who just won't make the cut even before they fill out the first page. No matter how motivated they are, just can't take a felony conviction or a probation kiddie.
That fragment of the Blarney Stone in my beret band ought to do some good, right?
This We'll Defend, backatcha!
Well, some media outlets have a legal injunction against FR posting full-text articles, as the result of a lawsuit by the Washington Post and the L.A. Times. So you do have to be somewhat careful, as some content is excerpt-only. (I think it's all pretty clearly explained on the posting screen, and when in doubt, ask the moderators.)
A website like Glenn Beck's, however, almost certainly has no leverage against FR if they don't like it, but in any case they probably do like having their material more widely disseminated. It's not like they have papers to sell; they just want their stuff to get read.
The stuff that gets posted to FR generally falls into three categories: news, pinko crap, and vanities. The vanities are just people spouting off; the other two categories refer to content from other outlets. By posting news articles, the material gets archived on FR. It's easy to search and to find. And the pinko crap--articles from the AP or CBS, for example--well, that gets monitored.
An illustration. A few weeks ago, the AP put out a story about the crowd at a Bush rally booing the ailing Bill Clinton, and Bush doing nothing to stop them. It was a fabrication, of course. They quickly changed the content of the story, and then changed it again. If the multiple texts hadn't been preserved on FR, the whole episode would have slipped down the memory hole, with people howling about an article which, if clicked on, would appear totally innocuous. With full text, the anatomy of their propaganda is laid bare.
I'm glad you posted this. Most useful.
Remember: the allegations are so serious that the evidence is irrelevant.
