When I spoke at Phyllis Schlaflys recent 80th birthday celebration in Washington, DC, I told the audience about the time that UNC-Greensboro (UNCG) hired a porn star to give a lecture on sexual health. The $3000 lecture focused on safe sodomy. Thats an oxymoron, isnt it? Sort of like jumbo shrimp, feminist scholar, or CBS journalist.
After CBS executives came to my defense and demonstrated that my allegations against UNCG were based on authentic documents, I managed to regain the confidence of most of the audience. Now, I have another story from UNCG that no one is going to believe. Maybe not even Dan Rather.
According to The Spartan, the new conservative student newspaper at UNCG, the Office of Student Life (OSL) hired a convicted sex offender as an employee, found out about it and decided not to fire him. Worse than refusing to fire him, the OSL actually rehired him for this academic year.
Per my request, the Guilford County District Attorneys office recently confirmed that OSL employee Michael Bishop, age 34, was convicted in 2002 of twenty counts of possession of child pornography. He was also accused of inappropriate relations with a 16 year-old boy.
The convicted sex offender is also a UNCG student who was elected chairman of the SGA finance committee last month. The finance committee, which is responsible for the budgets of all student organizations, controls $130,000 in public funds. Mr. Bishop is also the organizational senator for a campus gay organization called PRIDE.
Bishop is also employed as the business manager of the Campus Activates Board, which is responsible for planning student events such as Fall Fest and Homecoming. Readers may remember from some of my previous articles that UNCG also has a Gay Pride Week that features a drag queen day and a gay prom.
Bishop holds these positions despite the fact that on February 8, 2001, he was indicted by a Guilford County grand jury on twenty counts of possession of child pornography. That indictment describes digital images of boys from the age of 8 to 14 engaged in sexual acts. Most of the pictures depict oral sex, either between male boys or between adolescent boys and adult males, according to Guilford County records. However, at least two of the pictures are of boys being sodomized by adult males.
Mr. Bishops possession of this material was intentional said Guilford County Assistant District Attorney Julia Hejazi, who prosecuted Bishop. She added that Bishop would not have been charged if it were accidental. That helps to explain why Bishop entered a guilty plea to the child pornography charges on February 18, 2002. Although Bishop faced a maximum sentence of 25 years in prison, he ended up with only 30 months of probation and was placed on the state sex offender registry.
In 2001, Bishop was also charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor. The charge resulted from a criminal complaint by Piedmont-Triad International Airport police officer L.D. Bowden who alleged that he had probable cause to believe that Bishop had been on airport property with a 16-year-old boy who was naked. Though the charge was later dropped, Bishop was ordered to stay away from the juvenile in question. Bishop has also been charged in the past with trespassing, breaking and entering, and communicating threats.
Bishop has since been cited several times for violating the conditions of his probation including possession of pornographic materials and possession of a deadly weapon. Oddly, Bishop still hasnt been sent to prison. At the time of the probation violations, Bishop was an enrolled UNCG student and an employee of the OSL.
The Spartan interviewed OSL Associate Director Checka Leinwall regarding Bishops employment. In the course of the interview, Leinwall admitted that OSL learned last year that Bishop was a convicted sex offender. That was after hiring him. When asked why Bishops background wasnt checked before his employment, Leinwall responded, Once a student is admitted to the university we dont ask questions. When asked why Bishop wasnt terminated after OSL became aware of his criminal history, Leinwall responded, that would be illegal.
North Carolina is an employment-at-will state. As a general rule, employees can be terminated with or without cause.
But, of course, UNCG will never fire Michael Bishop. That is because UNCG is pro-gay and pro-pornography. The administration is so steeped in the politics of diversity, sexual orientation, and moral relativism that they cannot find a basis for condemning any form of behavior, even pedophilia and the exploitation of children. Not even the rape of eight year old boys.
Recently, someone asked me to explain the difference between North Carolinas mental institutions and its institutions of higher learning. He couldnt see much of a difference between the two. Come to think of it, neither can I.
I am SO glad I don't have kids to send to college (Not yet, anyway.) I don't think I could keep my sanity.
UNC-G is not a "real" college, but it plays one on TV!
I'm sure others will suggest more safe excellent schools, but, if you and your kids are true Born Again Christians, let me give you the names of two. First is Bob Jones University, and the other is Liberty University.
Ick.
Ease up. I was a PiKapp there. It doesn't surprise me. There were lots of those types on campus.
34 years old and trolling college campi. My my
"Have you ever been convicted of an offense against the law other than a minor traffic violation? (A conviction does not mean you cannot be hired. The offense and how recently you were convicted will be evaluated in relation to the job for which you are applying.) [ ] YES [ ] NO (if yes, explain fully on an additional sheet.)"
If this guy declared himself, then shame on the University (like they'd care). If he didn't, then there's a clause above the signature about dismissal for failure to disclosure information.
Ah, bummer -- that link gets close: you gotta enter "Bishop" for the last name and search. Then click on the Greensboro listing for "BISHOP,MICHAEL LEE".
Bump!
