Bush: Militarizing Border Won't Stop Illegal Deluge

The U.S. has no plans to deploy troops along the Mexican border to stanch the deluge of illegal aliens currently pouring into the country at the rate of 3 million per year, President Bush said in an interview broadcast on Monday.

"As the governor of Texas, I was very aware of this issue," Bush told Fox News Channel's Bill O'Reilly.

Story Continues Below

"There is a long border, that makes it hard to control. We have beefed up places along the border to try to stop" the flow, he said. When told that his policy didn't seem to be working, Bush insisted, "It’s working a little better.

"They're doing a pretty good job down in Arizona, which is the main border crossing. ... I think there's a thousand more border patrol agents along the border. We’re modernizing border techniques, we’re using better surveillance methods to stop this crossing at the border."

The president contended, however, that illegal immigration was driven primarily by the economic realities of the region.

"If you can make 50 cents in the interior of Mexico and five bucks in the interior of the United States, you're coming for the five bucks," he explained.

"I happen to believe the best way to enhance the border is to have temporary-worker cards available for people," he said. "I think the long-term solution for this issue on our border is for Mexico to grow a middle class. That's why I believe in NAFTA."

When warned that "a lot of people are not going to like that answer," Bush told O'Reilly, "Well it’s a, a truthful answer."

Why should it be a problem if illegals' property is confiscated?

I'd let the illegal keep what he worked for --- but confiscate his owner's property to pay for the education, health care and any back legal wages owed to the illegal. All the lazy housewives who bring in illegals to clean their toilets and fail to pay them minimum wage, Social Security, Workman's Comp and the rest --- let their property be confiscated to reimburse their slave but first the taxpayers for services provided to that slave or family of the slave.

There is no public support for your 'any means necessary' standard.

I'll bet there is more support than you think.

Put it to a national referendum, and make sure only "documented" people can vote.

I bet you'd be shocked.

Apply equal and fair treatment to the Mexicans as we do to the Canadians.

Let the Mexican government raise the minimum wage to Canada's level --- and provide Socialized medicine to it's people the way Canada does --- which keeps Canadians from flooding over the border to gain access to our free health care.

Aren't you the person that said the GOP wont do anything for us because we haven't done anything for them?

Yeah. You know something? It's still true. The folks concerned about illegal immigration haven't done jack-s**t for the GOP

The pinnacle of big government/big party arrogance.

Be my guest, keep repeating that line Poo.

I can just see thousands leaning back in their chairs, while our borders bleed and our social services, jails, schools are being completely choked off.

You could be right. But I'm still not in favor of militarizing the border or any of the other unconstitutional proposals I've seen so far on this forum.

Anti-illegal immigration candidates don't win elections.

They don't even win Republican primaries.

How about stopping the transfer of Yankee dollars back home to mama and pappa? Couldn't this at least be looked into?

No, I have a pretty good grasp of reality. Most Americans (thankfully) don't think sniping down little Mexican families as they try to make it into the USA.

I'm glad you clearly don't speak for most people, but I am more happy about the fact that your position will also never prevail.

Yeah. You know something? It's still true. The folks concerned about illegal immigration haven't done jack-s**t for the GOP. It's too much like work, after all.

Is that right? I always voted Republican from '95 to this year, without fail. I campaigned for every Republican on the ballot.

Not anymore. The GOP has taken my vote and support for granted and assumed I had pledged absolute fealty to them and to Bush.

Screw that.

Do you propose any deterrents at all towards securing the borders from illegal invaders? The risk/reward ratio is nonexistent for the illegals and their accomplices in America. And the Muhammadan enemy is waltzing on in...

Then it would be time to put the military on the border and shoot anyone trying to sneak in.

I think it might be better to turn them away at the border --- but instead of shooting them --- hand them each a gun. Show them the movie The Patriot before sending them back --- they really need to do something about the elites trying to get them out of their own homeland.

We don't need a national referendum.

We need every Freeper to know INTIMATELY what their county bureacrats and educrats are doing. What programs are they offering to illegals? What access to our schools? Under what authority and budget?

A HUGE source of our Conservative angst (as it is in this gravy train Bush era) is that we feel disempowered. NO! NO!

We all have County government. That's where the crap happens.

The "illegal immigration" zealots around here better damn sure have an understanding of the laws, rulings, administrative findings that empower illegals to get benefits in THEIR county.

If they don't ... find that out before you post. It's part of being legitimate.

Or else I'll stomp my feet and cry.

Anti-illegal immigration candidates don't win elections.

Which one would that be? Bush or Kerry? I can't seem to find such a candidate on the ballot.

So what does the GOP want Poo? Money? Votes? (prop 187) protest? Shall we write our representatives for the 10,000 time? Shall we send them chocolates? Bananas? Email them? Support David Dreier? Shall we give up more tax money?

Well, it's good to see you're upset about the shredded constitution. So am I. And that's one of the reasons I don't like the idea of abusing it further. Whatever the long term solution to illegal immigration is, it has to be constitutional.

I think most Americans are for defending the country from illegal invasion by any means necessary and don't fall for the "little Mexican family" propaganda, when that "little Mexican family" is KNOWINGLY BREAKING FEDERAL IMMIGRATION LAWS.

Geeez... trying to marginalize the majority of freepers? lol

I wasn't going to bite, but...

Your (and others') attempts to marginalize your opponents in this debate are comical.
The majority of Americans, and I have no doubt an even stronger majority of freepers, strongly disagree with you.

One doesn't have to be a kook, or a Buchanan-ite, or a racist to think *your* opinion is the one that is "nutty".

I can't stand Buchanan, I love my Mexican friends, and I'm as far from being radical as one can get. And I think it shows poor judgement to go on pretending there isn't a serious problem here - whatever the solution may be.
