Bush: Militarizing Border Won't Stop Illegal Deluge

The U.S. has no plans to deploy troops along the Mexican border to stanch the deluge of illegal aliens currently pouring into the country at the rate of 3 million per year, President Bush said in an interview broadcast on Monday.

"As the governor of Texas, I was very aware of this issue," Bush told Fox News Channel's Bill O'Reilly.

Story Continues Below

"There is a long border, that makes it hard to control. We have beefed up places along the border to try to stop" the flow, he said. When told that his policy didn't seem to be working, Bush insisted, "It’s working a little better.

"They're doing a pretty good job down in Arizona, which is the main border crossing. ... I think there's a thousand more border patrol agents along the border. We’re modernizing border techniques, we’re using better surveillance methods to stop this crossing at the border."

The president contended, however, that illegal immigration was driven primarily by the economic realities of the region.

"If you can make 50 cents in the interior of Mexico and five bucks in the interior of the United States, you're coming for the five bucks," he explained.

"I happen to believe the best way to enhance the border is to have temporary-worker cards available for people," he said. "I think the long-term solution for this issue on our border is for Mexico to grow a middle class. That's why I believe in NAFTA."

When warned that "a lot of people are not going to like that answer," Bush told O'Reilly, "Well it’s a, a truthful answer."

BUMP!!!

I sure don't think it started with Ahnold, but you are DEAD ON about 'property confiscation' sure as h*ll not being anything *NEW* for Californians. (...And I got a HUGE kick out of that poster yesterday - the one you suggested we ignore - saying something to the effect that 'no Californians reported being unhappy with all the OTHER 'CONservancies' California had.' -- LOL. -- OBVIOUSLY THAT guy has never talked to anyone who has had to deal with the 'coastal commission'. I can't speak to the others. ...Ignorance is bliss, I guess.)

Oh, I meant to ask you earlier, but forgot... Did you catch Dan Weintraub's column about Ahnold's 'missed opportunity' this morning? At least half the time, Weintraub is so *dead on* it's SCARY! I thought the one this morning was right up there with some of his best.

Oh! ...I see it was actually his SUNDAY AFTERNOON column. - Our local paper did not print it down here until this morning. Here is the link...
Daniel Weintraub: Governor should lead debate on immigrants

Be well.

Show me your papers please? What happened to the right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated??

Ummm....I didn't advocate any of that stuff in my post.

I don't see how I don't see how I could have been more clear in proposing that when employers break our laws by hiring non-legal workers they are prosecuted if warranted and convicted by a jury of their peers if the evidence against them is sound.

I don't want anyone kicking down the doors at Tyson Foods. But serving a legal warrant for a specific charge[s] is quite proper. That's how our legal system works.

Hey, here's an interesting article. http://www.washingtontimes.com/national/20040928-123346-3928r.htm

Seems like al Queda favors open borders too.

Hey, you're barking at the wrong guy. I'm all in favor of immigration control and kicking out illegals, etc. I'm just not in favor of dumping the constitution to do it. Sheesh.

Well, we have a name for the sound of our jobs vanishing. But what's the name for the Third World invasion?

The elitest of our society call this invasion "The American Experiment". The peons of our society call this a "Failed American Experiment".

the last thing Bush said on the issue is (paraphrasing) we need to beef up the border and we need to give the border patrol the resources they need to do the job.

He's had four years to do this. If he hasn't done it by now (especially after Sept 11), he never will. I only see him doing something if we have another attack inside our borders. It's a crying shame Americans would have to die before something is done.

Here we go again. How are the employers going to know if an employee is here legally or not?

This is where I disagree with the President, who on this point has his head up his.........

Backside

and I agree. If the Freakin republican party doesn't pull it's collective head out of it's ass on this issue and start doing something about it, this will be the last time I vote for a Republican.

The Constitution party is looking better and better every time I see BS like this.

and before you say it (the collective you), I really don't care if a Dim gets elected later on down the road. The Republicans can do something to stop it and to stop other like me from leaving the Party, if you won't do what is necessary then the Republicans have left me, not the other way around.

The INS estimates that 7.0 million unauthorized immigrants resided in the United States in January 2000. The total population estimate is somewhat higher than INS’ previous estimate. In its last set of estimates, INS estimated the population to be 5.0 million in October 1996; the new estimates produced a total of about 5.8 million for the same date. Estimated annual population growth was variable in the 1990s; on average, however, the population grew by about 350,000 per year from 1990 to 1999, about 75,000 higher than INS’ previous annual estimate of 275,000 for the 1990s.

From this report. Note that it is in 2000. That has given them four more years (under Bush) to come here unchecked, unfettered and with tacit apporoval.

As to your "change the issue" question, no I would not as that would depress wages for U.S. workers.

Well, Diogenes just found an honest man in Athens.

Al Qaeda seeks tie to local gangs

By Jerry Seper
THE WASHINGTON TIMES

A top al Qaeda lieutenant has met with leaders of a violent Salvadoran criminal gang with roots in Mexico and the United States — including a stronghold in the Washington area — in an effort by the terrorist network to seek help infiltrating the U.S.-Mexico border, law enforcement authorities said.
Adnan G. El Shukrijumah, a key al Qaeda cell leader for whom the U.S. government has offered a $5 million reward, was spotted in July in Honduras meeting with leaders of El Salvador's notorious Mara Salvatrucha gang, which immigration officials said has smuggled hundreds of Central and South Americans — mostly gang members — into the United States.

The employee verification system. All prospective applicants get their SS# checked. No pass, no work.

Seven million?

It should be 30-35 million by now if you listen to the "open borders" nutcakes.

Mexico has 130 million people.

You saw it too? I guess it's not just about poor folks looking to take American jobs. Some are looking to take our lives too.
