Bush: Militarizing Border Won't Stop Illegal Deluge

The U.S. has no plans to deploy troops along the Mexican border to stanch the deluge of illegal aliens currently pouring into the country at the rate of 3 million per year, President Bush said in an interview broadcast on Monday.

"As the governor of Texas, I was very aware of this issue," Bush told Fox News Channel's Bill O'Reilly.

Story Continues Below

"There is a long border, that makes it hard to control. We have beefed up places along the border to try to stop" the flow, he said. When told that his policy didn't seem to be working, Bush insisted, "It’s working a little better.

"They're doing a pretty good job down in Arizona, which is the main border crossing. ... I think there's a thousand more border patrol agents along the border. We’re modernizing border techniques, we’re using better surveillance methods to stop this crossing at the border."

The president contended, however, that illegal immigration was driven primarily by the economic realities of the region.

"If you can make 50 cents in the interior of Mexico and five bucks in the interior of the United States, you're coming for the five bucks," he explained.

"I happen to believe the best way to enhance the border is to have temporary-worker cards available for people," he said. "I think the long-term solution for this issue on our border is for Mexico to grow a middle class. That's why I believe in NAFTA."

When warned that "a lot of people are not going to like that answer," Bush told O'Reilly, "Well it’s a, a truthful answer."

How does it "jettison the Constitution" to make businesses obey the law?

If you are talking about a federal ID system or asset forfeiture, they are both violations of the 4th amendment, as is using our social security number as an ID.

As to the rest of your post, all I can say is I agree illegal immigration is a problem, but I am not in favor of instituting a federal ID system, nor militarizing the border, nor building a wall around our nation, nor tasking our employers with the responsibility of enforcing federal immigration laws. I see it as primarily an economic problem and believe that the long term solution will involve capital, trade and labor vs criminal penalties against employers or militarizing the border, etc. I agree that in the short term it will require beefing up our BP resources, but that's not going to solve the longer term problem. Mexico is going to be our neighbor for a long time.

Said Civil War did result from the multicultural differences represented by the multilingual problem. BTW, can you cite the "vast areas" of America, both in geographic terms and as a percent of population, that did not speak English?

There is also the example of the Saint Patrick Brigades, composed entirely of Irish immigrants, that mutinied in the Mexican-American War rather than fight fellow Catholics. But I know, assimilation is overrated.

That's a red Herring Mad Dog, Posse Comitatus deals with a Standing army ruling the mass. It has nothing to do with them lining out borders and keeping the Criminal invaders OUT. That lack of spine comes from the White House.

Said civil war did not arise from the country being multilingual.

It could be argued that it arose from a bicultural situation, however.

Right! Our military is for foreign deployment only.

The military, our jobs and cash are America's greatest exports.

Bzzt. The Posse Comitatus Act forbids using the Army for enforcement of domestic laws. It's called illegal immigration for a reason.

Just when I thought I'd had enough disappointment for one day! *LOL* (I've been somewhat "parked" on another thread on which certain people seem compelled to bash Keyes and Christians who have biblical worldviews.)

But I suppose life goes on. :-)

Said Civil War did result from the multicultural differences represented by the multilingual problem.

The specific cultural difference in question was the question of slavery: said cultural difference was addressed on both sides by English speakers (most non-English-speaking folks didn't give a s**t about it until the draft board told 'em to get on the train).

I am very glad that you see this issue clearly, unlike many here on FR.

The public face of conservatism shouldn't be left to those who would slay nice smiling folks trying to find a better life. In fact, that's disgusting.

That's not to say we shouldn't deal with the illegal immigration problem. It's just that the 'put the military of the border' crew has almost no grasp of what that would really mean.

The guestworker program is a disaster in German and it would be a disaster here. Once they are here on a guestworker pass - they will NEVER go home - just ask the Germans. It does not work!!!!!!! I wish he'd quit trying to sell us on this idea. I am so angry about this issue I am not going to vote for him again.

Wow! I'm having trouble believing that FReepers would call for big government police state tactics.

And I am having trouble believing that citizens of the United States are willing to let this country's sovereignty fall by the wayside.

Well Mr. President, do you know how to avoid this problem? Pay them NO BUCKS!!!! If they come illegally - thrown them out - give them NOTHING - then that 50 cents earned in Mexico will start sounding better and better wouldn't it?
