Bush: Militarizing Border Won't Stop Illegal Deluge

The U.S. has no plans to deploy troops along the Mexican border to stanch the deluge of illegal aliens currently pouring into the country at the rate of 3 million per year, President Bush said in an interview broadcast on Monday.

"As the governor of Texas, I was very aware of this issue," Bush told Fox News Channel's Bill O'Reilly.

Story Continues Below

"There is a long border, that makes it hard to control. We have beefed up places along the border to try to stop" the flow, he said. When told that his policy didn't seem to be working, Bush insisted, "It’s working a little better.

"They're doing a pretty good job down in Arizona, which is the main border crossing. ... I think there's a thousand more border patrol agents along the border. We’re modernizing border techniques, we’re using better surveillance methods to stop this crossing at the border."

The president contended, however, that illegal immigration was driven primarily by the economic realities of the region.

"If you can make 50 cents in the interior of Mexico and five bucks in the interior of the United States, you're coming for the five bucks," he explained.

"I happen to believe the best way to enhance the border is to have temporary-worker cards available for people," he said. "I think the long-term solution for this issue on our border is for Mexico to grow a middle class. That's why I believe in NAFTA."

When warned that "a lot of people are not going to like that answer," Bush told O'Reilly, "Well it’s a, a truthful answer."

If we build a freaking 100 foot Wall of Death across the whole border, with landmines and lazers and cyberninjas programed to kill every foriegner within 5 miles, do you know what a terrorist would do? He would:

1) Fly in.

or

2) Ride a boat in.

Border guards will keep out poor Mexicans, but they won't keep out Osama.

Are you willing to live in the suicide bombing-environment of a bus or church blowing up every few weeks or months or days like the Israeli's? Or do you disagree with Israel building a wall?

"I don't think we should be seizing assets, but what is wrong with a punitive fine?

I'd have to be a HUGE fine -- not a slap on the wrist.

But in the meantime we STILL have a problem that NO law enforcement authority wants to address, and Dubya's NOT helping solve the problem.

"How is that different fromm, say, East German border policy?"

People were trying to flee an evil regime there. Here, they're breaking and entering, and it's costing taxpayers billions--(using our own govts. force to take it, yet.) What a compassionate racket.

Take it out of your own pocket, Mr. Geek, I've got better things to do with my money!

Right. I'd like to see the source of "3 million" illegals per year please.

Considering we (CBP) only apprehend 10 to 20 percent of the illegal aliens that cross the border, it's very likely that 3 million have gotten by us.

Does that mean all 3 million stay in the US? No, most return to Mexico within 6 to 12 months.

The permanent illegal population increases by an estimated 300,000 to 500,000 each year.

"Or the desert can take care of the problem as we close down the easy-crossing parts of the border and funnel them into the desert areas... patrolling to keep the "do-gooders" from providing water and food to them. No need for government guns to do the job at all.
"

I'm sure voters, the Supreme Court, Congress, and the Lord Himself would smile on that. : (

But I think we're talking about two different problems here.

Possibly. I am talking about about doing something to help seal our borders while we still have a global Islamic terrorist threat and a massive intrusion by illegal aliens through our porous borders.

Unless we do SOMETHING to narrow that flood, there is little we can do to keep as many ME terrorist groups from infiltrating our country quite easily.

Then there is the issue of illegals soaking up our school, welfare, and medical resources and costing us billions. If you can't come to this country LEGALLY, you have already proven you have no regard for our laws. We don't want you in that case.

Two problems, one solution. Slam the border shut.

As an employer who hires nothing but Americans and pay all my required state/fed'l payroll taxes it makes me furious when I see a multitude of employers in various industries openly breaking federal law by hiring illeglas and EVADING numerous taxes while aiding and abetting illegal immigration in the process. Additionally, they get to pay minimal wages to illegals knowing full well the taxpayers will get socked to supplement the employees living expenses. Having a system such as this where some employers are above the law while others have to toe the line is just another reason we're slowly becoming a banana republic instead of a constitutional republic......in other words we're committing national suicide.

Now you are just being stupid. Right now, there is very little to stop crossings at the borders. No need to make it easier for them by leaving the f*cking door open.

Punitive fines are the same as seizing assets. Money is an asset. I'm not in favor of tasking our employers with enforcing immigration laws. Business is already overregulated and overburdened as it is.

The entire illegal alien guesstimation system is built around this presumption that the effectiveness of the border never changes.

Incorrect.

The estimates are actually based on pretty hard data, ranging from electronics to visual confirmation.

On some days we may catch 70%, while on others we may only get 10% or less.

The Agents on the ground know how many get through. We used to keep track, but management and Washington saw the astronomical numbers and nixed that record keeping.

When told that his policy didn't seem to be working,

Uh, by Bill O'Reilly...Just because O'Reilly likes the military solution doesn't make it THE answer.

None of the estimates I've seen do that. It's always the same story: we caught X and since we only catch 10% of them that means 9-times-X got through. There's that built in assumption every time, and I've never seen it backed up by anything to prove they're still only catching 10%. They might have done some studying 20 years ago but now it's taken as a give that 90% get through.

You are a liar.

So offer a SOLUTION. Snice remarks and appeasement of ILLEGALS (LAW-BREAKERS, by definition are ILLEGAL) won't get it. Keeping them out and then rounding up the ones who are here and expelling them are what is needed. Your appeasement will only help speed the downfall of the Republic. Bush may be presiding over the last days of America as we know it... and perhasp that's his goal, globalist that he is.

So overburdened that they must hire illegals. My heart weeps for them.

Though we disagree on this, I still love FR.

Well, am I wrong? Why spend $100 billion and suspend half the Constitution if they can just go to Cuba and ride on in via a converted floating Studebaker?

Look, I usually agree with you man, you're an oldbie, you'e seen the highs and lows, but man, you're hanging us all out to dry if you're going to abandon W for not implimenting a plan that is both militarily, financially, and politically unworkable.
