Though California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger was one of the star speakers at the Republican National Convention, a look at the bills he has signed of late reveals a chief executive much more in line with the party of John Kerry.
Schwarzenegger, who holds a 61 percent approval rating in the Golden State, was known to be on the left socially, but those views have come to the surface recently as he signed several bills passed by the Democrat-dominated Legislature and not all Republicans are thrilled with the development.
"Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger must not be too troubled by what he's called 'girlie men' because he's just signed a bill into law that maintains 'sex' in California to include drag queens, cross-dressers and transsexuals," the Rev. Lou Sheldon of the Traditional Values Coalition said in a statement. "Schwarzenegger has sided with the homosexual and drag queen lobby in muddying the biological realities of male and female."
Other eye-raising action taken by the popular governor include signing bills this month that:
require health insurance companies to "provide registered domestic partner coverage equal to that provided to spouses";
allow heroin abusers to buy drug needles without a prescription and decriminalizes previously unlawful needle possession;
toughen auto-emission rules;
reduce cruise ship pollution; and
ban the sale of .50-calibre BMG rifles. He also has paroled a record 48 murderers serving life sentences, the Associated Press reports.
Some analysts believe Schwarzenegger can afford to be cavalier due to his positive ratings.
"The governor enjoys very high popularity and can take some risks," Mark Baldassare, polling director for the Public Policy Institute of California, told AP.
"But he is also a Republican governor who recognizes that most California voters are Democrats and independents, and to continue to receive high approval from public, he needs to reach out beyond the conservative roots of his party."
The governor has not pleased Democrats on all issues, vetoing a bill to offer driver's licenses to illegal aliens and one that would have raised the state's minimum wage.
"Schwarzenegger has given a raw deal to the people who elected him the millions of Californians who desire sane government and want good role models for children," Randy Thomasson, executive director of Campaign for California Families, said in a statement. "Amidst his high poll numbers, Arnold has apparently become unafraid to push his liberal agenda regarding marriage, free speech, drug legalization, social engineering, and releasing convicted killers into our neighborhoods."
Thmasson continued: "We call upon Arnold Schwarzenegger to veto the several remaining anti-family bills on his desk. The people should flood him with phone calls and not trust that hell do the right thing.
One of those bills, AB 1520, would creates a state-endorsed transsexual veterans memorial.
I wasn't ever a big Arnold supporter, but sometimes you've got to take what you can get. California has a very liberal electorate and for the foreseeable future we're not going to see a conservative governor there. Arnold is about the best we're likely to get.
And just which group did he appease when he paroled 48 murderers serving life sentences? I doubt the criminal class does much voting.
Hmmm. South Dakota is a conservative state, but it doesn't stop them from have a leftie like Tom Daschle. I don't know why conservatives are bigger quitters.
I liked Arnold a lot more when he was an actor.
Same here. My goal was to recall Red Davis and replace him with "other than Bulls...amonte". The purpose was to hand the Rats a defeat; a large monkey wrench in the gears of their Kalifornia machine, and MOST importantly to ruin Davis' career and his Presidential aspirations. He would be as bad as the Frenchurian or the First Pervert.
I got that and I'll take it. We're not likely to get any Americans in Kalifornia government untill the North Koreans reach San Francisco with nuclear missles.
Of course Arnold is a social liberal. He knows where the votes are in this state. He'll happily embrace pro-business and free market positions a Democrat would reject but at the same time he reassures most Californians he's not a troglodyte conservative. He has personal approval ratings most politicians here would die for.
Care to explain why the majority of Californians voted for Prop 22, the Defense of Marriage Act, which pre-emptively defined Marriage as exclusively between a man and woman?
We've got enough Conservatives in this state. The only problem is that the California GOP typically supports nothing but Democrat Lite.
Most Democrats do favor traditional marriage. That doesn't keep them from supporting Kerry. Republicans here are outnumbered 3-2 in the electorate. The bulk of the votes are in the liberal coastal counties, which are Democratic strongholds.
We should have dumped Arlen Spector though. If there is a real conservative that can win, (like Toomey), then we ought to back him.
Gay marriage doesn't fly with the public anywhere. Even in ultra-liberal states like Massachusetts, large majorities are against it.
personal list.
Homosexual Agenda Ping - a wrap-up of Arnie stuff. I was bitterly disappointed by some of the bills he recently signed. Well, not shocked or really that suprised, but I had higher hopes.
"Fiscally conservative, socially liberal" is not digestible, nor good for the health. It means someone hasn't thought it through.
Let me and Scripter know if anyone wants on/off this pinglist.
BTTT!!!!!!!
Arnold is indeed acting like a girlyman!!!!
Tell me what's pro-business about about signing a bill that treats domestic partners the same as spouses and will raise premiums out of reach for many small companies? And tell me about his wonderful workers comp bill that may lower premiums a scant 15% after two years of increases nearing 300%?
BTTT
Hey BARLOWMAKER! Quick!! Over here... Another fire to put out before this anti-Schwarzenrenegger thing gets completely out of hand!!!
ROFL! Girlieman alert? lol... lol... lol...
Snickering.
