First LRT crash is fatal

An 87-year-old Minneapolis man died Saturday afternoon when his car collided with a light-rail train, ending three months of accident-free operations for the city's new Hiawatha Line.

Service at Metro Transit's 12 rail stations was stopped for more than two hours after the crash, which killed Hilmer Arnold Iverson, who had glaucoma and trouble hearing.

No injuries were reported by the train's driver or the 40 passengers on the northbound, single-car train.

At the south Minneapolis home that he shared with his father, Gregg Iverson said that his father, known as Arnold, had gone to Target to pick up a new pair of tennis shoes.

"I was just thinking it was kind of strange he hadn't come back yet, then the police showed up," he said.

You just wait and see how the tally grows. I live in Oregon where they Elites called "METRO" have been cramming Light Rail down the throat of this region. It has been rumored that the subsidization of ridership has gone as high as $ 20.00 per rider per direction. The plan was to take the pressure off the Freeways and Surface Streets and has done just the opposite. I would like to know what LTR fatalities would be nationwide for this year. I would bet its higher than one would think.

Anytime they introduce light rail in a city there result is a lot of accidents from drivers not used to the presence of such trolleys. In the San Jose, CA area, when the Valley Transit Authority introduced their light rail system there was a LOT of collisions with automobiles until drivers finally got used to their presence.

One death is one too many.

Remember, do it for the children.

>>OK star and sickle. LRT has killed more innocent people than you predicted

So, stupid people
who should not be driving die,
and folks blame the train . . .

Normally I would be the first to bash light rail.... but, I bet ol' Hilmer here is more than likely our root cause.

And he was driving? You can't see or hear so lets get behind the wheel of a death mobile, yup, and when it finally catches up to you, blame it on the public transportation that you drove in front of.

This is like blaming the driver who runs over the squirrle that jumps in front of the wheels. Stupidity. Maybe with more Light Rail, old geezers who can't see or hear do not have to be out on the road. If not here, he would have ran some kids over or someone else. Remember last year the granny that put the car in reverse and killed a bunch of kids at a school? Same deal. Kids fault for standing on the sidewalk.

Yup, best ban buses, cars, motorcycles, bycicles...anything some old geezer who is blind and deaf could run into. Get rid of pedestrians and small animals too.

This guy should not have been driving. Very sad.

Neighbors and family have given accounts that they were not surprised that he had an accident.

The victim's son said that friends told him to let the doctor be the bad guy when it came to ending his driving priveleges.

I'm sure the son is having regrets. Thank goodness that nobody else was harmed.

Last year an elderly driver backed into my son's car and drove away as my son honked and yelled.

About a month ago I called the police on an elderly driver who hit a large dog and kept driving without any speed variation.

This issue definitely needs attention.

"Anytime they introduce light rail in a city there result is a lot of accidents..."

Too true. When it was first introduced in Denver, we had a lot of car accidents and an amazing number of pedestrian problems (Distracted Drivers and Homeless Drunks Most Impacted!).

Now it's not a problem.

Why was a guy with glaucoma and hearing loss even driving in the first place?

And given that he was 87 and in the Twin Cities, he was probably a Democrat, which doesn't say much for his intelligence.

Exactly. But then he would have to drive pop around, takes time. There is going to death on our roads in much larger quantities considering how many borderline geriatric baby boomers are already there and they won't give up their licences without a fight. Of course their generation never bothered with installing public transportation because they never planned on stopping their driving.

They need signs reading: "Caution! Darwin at work."
