According to historian Paul Johnson (among others) FDR basically dragged out the Depression by hiking up tariffs to make imports too expensive for the blue collar worker, so few people could raise their standard of living. It took that much longer for the middle class to buy household machines that would have been affordable at lower tariff prices. Non-competion to "help Americans" never works.
