We need to spend every penny necessary to fight worldwide jihadism.

See, man. That rotten Bush is up to no good. I'm calling the ACLU, man! I know he's out to infringe our civil liberties. I knew it all along. And here it is. Spying on his own countrymen. This is despicable! :) Denote plenty of heavy doses of sarcasm.

Great post. You're right. We need every dime to counter terrorism.

Imagine nothing less than a real-time overhead recording of the US.... or Baghdad. Hit "REVERSE", and find out where that car bomb came from.

In the movies, they always use those satellites to find topless sunbathers.

I do believe in small gov like most republicans but I don't care if I'm on film when I'm out and about in the public. We should all live like we are being watched. We would probably spend more time doing the right thing.

O'Reilly is handled the same way Rather is - stop watching...if his ratings go down, so do ad revs and the bosses take notice,,,ah, the delights of capitalism.

If this works in real life, WHERE DO I SIGN UP? Actually, it sounds to me like if you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear....

I haven't been able to stand watching O'Reilly in years. I hope he gets Ratherbiased's job at CBS, that way I won't have to even see commercials for his stupid show.

No doubt the Pentagon is carefully monitoring the license plates of all cars driven by people who enter and exit all the kabob joints and Turkish coffee houses within a 100 mile radius in and around greater Hackensack and Detroit between the hours of 6am and 12pm.

It would require astronomical amount of memory, besides other things.

And a suspension of the known laws of physics. :-)

Nah....there are only 3 or 4 birds in orbit, and less than 100 aircraft equiped for overhead photo work. It's pretty tough to get real-time photos or video out of the NGA since they don't have any aircraft or spacecraft of their own.

Let's add some realism here.
It is illegal for NGA to image the United States proper
with goverment satellites.
However, commerical sattelites can do it anytime they want
and anyone can get it (unless the goverment buys the
imagery exclusively to stop outside sales).
At least that is my understanding.
Tin Foil hats off.

Their work brushes up against the fine line between protecting the public and performing illegal government spying on Americans

Not hardly, they aren't spying on individuals, they are just making better, more useful and higher tech, maps and making them more efficiently.

We're hardly there yet. You'd have to have very big and very expensive birds in geosynchronis orbit. (Think something on the order of the Hubble, but looking down) or lots of still expensive, but smaller birds in lower orbits. The ones in lower orbits don't stay over one spot, which is why you'd need lots to get continusous coverage. You'd be better off with 3 or so Global Hawk or similar high altitude UAVs. Two two keep one over the city at all times, plus a spare.
