Wooing Mom

This column from a perceptive woman may explain how "soccer moms" became "security moms"

Wooing Moms Spt 24, 2004

Freud's most famous question - "What do women want?" - might be the title of this political season's playbook, as President George W. Bush and Sen. John F. Kerry strut their best stuff and try to win women's votes.

What women want, apparently, is to be safe. In post-Sept. 11 America, the group of swing voters formerly known as "soccer moms" has morphed into "security moms" - mostly white, married women with children who worry first about national security. In other words, in a trend that Freud doubtless would find unsurprising, women are looking to their leading man for protection. It is, after all, a jungle out there.

Thus far, polls show Bush leading among such women, which is causing headaches for the Kerry campaign. In recent years, women reliably have voted Democratic, as in 2000, when 54 percent went for Al Gore.

But 9/11 really did change everything, including women's idea of an alpha male.

Aren't all rational people worried about national security?

Yes, but I think women are more worried about their home being safe.

That's what makes them rational people, they recognize that right now, this is the most important, over the economy, over anything else.

I have three lib acquaintances, young, 30-ish, unmarried females, who plan on voting for Kerry because President Bush is going to take away a woman's right to have an abortion.

My idea of the 'alpha male' was firmly fixed, well before 9/11.
And it sure as hell wasn't a namby-pamby, effete, elitist girly man!

Mrs. Buckeye Battle Cry knew a real man even before 9/11.

She has two baby Buckeyes to worry about and the thought of that nit-wit Kerry flicking his tongue and turning over our right to defend ourselves to the French, Germans and the U.N. just sickens her.

Five feet of red-headed fury. Kerry does not want to meet her and hear what she has to say to him!

I've decided it's those who are SELFISH vs. those who are not.....I have a friend (58) who just confessed to me she's voting for Kerry .....because of "the war" and Alzheimers research. She is married with no children. It's all about ME...ME...ME for her....except she's easily brainwashed. Her parents both had alzheimers (actually, they were both drunks)....and she's stupid enough not to think war could come here...AGAIN and affect us!!!! Plus, I don't think she even thinks about the effect on the next generation or two.......AAARRRRGGGGHHHHH.

Sounds like they're running out of time to have more pro-abortion babies. If they don't have pro-abortion kids, the next generation will be comosed of a larger proportion of pro-life kids.

I think that selfishness explains most of our social problems today. Think about divorce, abortion on demand, single mothers and men who refuse to marry, pornography, drugs, and refusal to serve for National Defense. Everything is about ME ME ME.

The quintessential question in the 2004 Presidential campaign is very simple: Do you want to live or do you want to die? For women (and men) still siting on the fence it comes down to W's resolute foreign policy to Kerry's policy of the day. Most would prefer a President with a backbone of steel, not the tapioca spine of Kerry.
Incidentally, Kathleen Parker is an awesome writer. For those not familiar with her efforts, check out her recent archives.
