Oh great. What's a girl to do? I guess I'll just put on my ruby red slippers and click my heels together and say "I wish I was in Kansas".

Authorities urged more than three million people living in coastal areas to evacuate as Jeanne approached. However there were few indications by late Saturday that millions of Florida residents were heeding that advice. Bob Oldakowski, the mayor of Key Biscayne, Florida, in Miami Dade County, says many Floridians are suffering from hurricane fatigue, and are choosing to wait out the storm at home.
"This is a serious storm, and, I think, the reality of hurricane fatigue is very evident on my island," said Bob Oldakowski. "We are Zone A, so when anything happens, Key Biscayne has to evacuate. This is the fourth time in five weeks, and people are tired. My sense is that people are making decisions based more on fatigue, and less on 'whether this is the right decision for me and my family.'"

Their home is made of concrete.

Speaking of concrete, dh grew up in Guam. Lived there for more than 20 years and said he has been in 70-80 hurricanes (typhoons there). The homes on Guam are made of concrete, reinforced with rebar. Apparently, that's what it takes to withstand continual storms like these. Even the roofs were concrete/rebar.

To my fellow Freepers:

We're looking to maybe relocate from here in Hurricane Alley. We've been through enough hurricanes now, and we're tired of sitting on pins and needles for 6 months every year. I love my hometown, but I can't stand it anymore.

I work from home, but my husband is jeweler who does custom work (designs, carves, waxes, polishes, etc) Any hot job prospects for him out there, I would appreciate it. (No northeast or Left Coast cities, please)

Thanks.

PS: Anyone know anything about Jackson, Tennessee? Sounds like a nice community.

"So, what does that mean? Do you expect a Northward turn?"

Sorry for the delay - was out for a bit. No, I'm actually just confused. I see ALL the forecasts converging on roughly a Vero Bch strike. I'm looking at the High pressure ridge to the north and thinking "well, gee, if that was strong enough to steer her west for the past 3 days, then why -- at the same 'strength' -- is the storm expected to start turning north?

All that being said: it's academic now.... the turn is happening -- now up to 27.1N from about 27.8 about 4-6 hours ago. So Melb to Ft. Pierce is the target, I suppose.

The scary part? The 950 mb pressure drop. Local reports coming up next.

Looks like it's just following the egg shaped end of that eastern high and then will shoot between the two highs.

Maybe we can thank Ivan for Jeanne not heading for Texas?

Your welcome. I think your idea is a good one. It could be quite helpful for people.

I learned something just from reading that thread, and I'm not in the hurricane area.

Yes, but it wasn't out for long and Jeanne doesn't look to be as powerful, at this point, as Frances was. If we're not able to help but one person then it will be worth the effort to that one. :)

I saw the turn in going to be caused by low pressure forming north of the Keys. I don't know, but that is what Roland S. said on my local NBC affiliate.

Oh yea, breaking news from Max Mayfield during the 5:00 advisory:

"A mobile home is not place to be during a hurricane."

Thanks Max!!!!!

Anyone have a good streaming news site? My dish is blinking in and out because of the heavy rain.
