Fr's Strike of the week: French postal staff strike against post offices closures

PARIS, Sept 21 (AFP) - Many of France's 320,000 postal workers went on strike Tuesday to protest reorganisation plans they fear will lead to nearly half of the country's 14,000 post offices being closed with massive lay-offs.

Management of the state-owned La Poste said seven to nine percent of the personnel observed the nationwide stoppage, while one of the three main unions behind it said 15 to 20 percent stopped work. ....

The Socialist Party said it would follow up the strike with its own "defence campaign" in October. ...

The prospect of privatising or partly privatising post offices is on the cards for several countries, including Britain and France. ...

The mayors of some remote regions have promised to join the protest out of concern that their communities will find themselves increasingly isolated by the closures.

Amazingly, the USPS, which has over 50% of all the mail in the world to handle, has barely more than 2 times the number of employees the French postal service has.

And 14,000 post offices in such a small country?

These guys are featherbedding.

Are you sure that is correct? The Labor department sez:

Each week, the U.S. Postal Service delivers billions of pieces of mail, including letters, bills, advertisements, and packages. To do this in an efficient and timely manner, the Postal Service employs about 845,000 individuals.

The French have 320,000. Two times that is 640,000. Current employment of fulltimers at USPS is just under 800,000. That makes USPS employment at 2.5 times French postal employment, although the US has many times more mail than France, and 5 times the population.

The French are slackers!

USPS is the worlds largest civilian employer,
and has the worlds largest non-military vehicle fleet.

A lot of Americans have friends and family in France, I think you are very intolerant person. All french are not like you think, you generalize. For example, Frenchs don't think that Americans are like Michael Moore or Kerry (and you known that these persons are rather disreputable characters ). We make the difference.

I think you are taking her too seriously.

I have a couple of friends in Paris and Avignon though I email them instead of snail mail. They are decent enough people and do not quite fit the stereo-type we have of the French. However they do admit that some of the stereotyping we do is valid, at least towards the Parisians. They hate it when I pick on them about having major national strikes every week but they know it is in jest.

I don't hate the French but I must admit I really hate their government and their leanings towards socialism. Well... actually I DON'T hate it simply because as long as then elect socialists in Europe I know I don't have to worry about then meeting the Lisbon agreement.

Frenchs don't think that Americans are like Michael Moore or Kerry (sic)

Yeah, the problem is that the French WANT us all to be like Mochael Moore and John Kerry.

It's funny I live near Avignon.
I know you don't hate frenchs. If I post on this forum it's because I want Americans know that the big problem in our country is the gouvernment. I learned in few days Dominique de Villepin would be the first minister instead Raffarin and I am not very glad by this new.

What is your opinion on Nicolas Sarkozy? The growing consensus by American analysts is that a Sarkozy government would be good for both France and international relations. But you are the one who gets to make the decisions at the voting booth.

I don't think that all french want you all to be like Michael Moore and Kerry, only the french government and the french journalists (socialists). The problem is that all the news you have from France, are done by french journalists, and when you read newspapers and watch TV, your journalists broadcast the french news. The worse newspapers Le Monde, Libération and many others.

I don't know if Nicolas Sarkory would be better for us, but I know he loves USA. He done fews mistakes. He created
the CFCM, and he often goes to Algerie, and others. The only thing I know is Chirac will do everything to prevent him from being President of France because he hate him (it's personnal, one day I will tell you why )and I don't know how for the moment, but I guess. In november Sarkory will be President of UMP.

Since you are new, you need to read more and post less to get the culture of the place.
