Sir Paul McCartney has urged California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to ban the French delicacy foie gras.
The former Beatle appealed to Mr Schwarzenegger in a letter to make California the first state to ban the pate made from geese and duck livers.
Other stars, including Martin Sheen, Kim Basinger and Chrissie Hynde, also urged him to approve a bill to outlaw the sale and production of foie gras
Foie Gras is made by force-feeding the birds to expand their livers.
Sir Paul was asked to write the letter by animal rights group Viva!-USA.
He said: "As you probably know, the public has clearly demonstrated that it supports a ban on this inhumane practice.
"There is clearly nothing humane about mechanically inducing disease in a bird by forcing a pipe down its throat and making it consume such an abnormal quantity of food that its liver expands many times its normal size."
Last month, California's state legislature approved a bill that would outlaw the sale and production of foie gras.
'Cruelty'
The bill is now sitting on Mr Schwarzenegger's desk awaiting his assent.
Sir Paul added: "I feel sure that your natural feelings of compassion will encourage you to sign this basic humane bill into law."
In a separate letter, celebrities including Casey Affleck, Ally Sheedy and Christina Applegate, also urged him to enact the bill.
"It is wrong to subject animals to this kind of cruelty to produce a luxury food item," they said.
Most people can do something about force feeding animals to expand their livers, but not jihadists sawing off mens' heads. All a person has to do is not eat it, but personally I don't know what I can do to stop jihadis from doing what they do best.
Well, I refuse to eat in a restaurant which won't serve me a rare cheeseburger. Even if I don't want one at the moment I will always ask. If they say 'No' I then say 'Go'.
I'd love to pull in with a busload of people and do this to some idiotic restaurant some day. The management'll scream that it's the gubmint's fault, but they never protest until........

They are animals. When they work their way up the food chain, then they can have rights. If I choose to make a pet of them, it's good for them. If I choose to make a meal of them, it's bad for them. You may not be a PETA activist, but you are in line with their views.
If you like it, then eat up. Who cares what the bunny huggers think? I wouldn't eat it because I hate liver, but I could care less about how it's produced.
Regarding the starvation of chickens, see www.poultry.org/molting. USDA references are also given. If this were not going on, no one would be writing a petition. Also, the Humane Farming Organization has some papers on the topic. However, I urge you to do your own search. Forced molting has already been banned in Europe.
In Korea, dogs raised on farms for food are beaten to death because it is believed to improve the flavor of the meat. The government has been asked halt it on the grounds of animal cruelty. Again, do your own search.
In Spain, bulls killed in bullfights are later sold for meat. Sticking multiple swords into an animal so that it dies a slow death does not destroy the quality of the meat, but most would agree this is an inhumane approach to killing your dinner.
“Quality product” and “farmer’s self interest” do not automatically equate to “better care”, the protestations of emotionless freepers notwithstanding.
I am also pro-life. However many in this community find it impossible that people could hold both views.
Right after the Liberals in the California legislature failed to raise the minimum wage, the Legislature turned around and banned hand-weeding for all agriculture because "it's too back-breaking."
As a consequence, California businesses and consumers once again are going to suffer as a direct result of the Great Socialist Dream of the Leftists in charge. Businesses won't be able to compete because of the handicaps placed on them, and consumers will end up spending more for imported produce as well as smaller quantities of local produce.

Anyone who is against cruelty to animals is automatically an animal rights extremist or a PETA wannabe. And probably a misanthrope who doesn't care about the suffering of their fellow humans.
