Article hits the nail on the head. Just ordinary folks who don't trust the elites.

'So what's the big mystery? Not that ordinary people knew "arcane" things about typefaces and spacing, 'but that the big machers at CBS didn't know perfectly ordinary things'
Exactly what I wrote when I read that it was being argued that obviously it was some young kid who made the forgeries. No, more likely it was some insulated weathly career guy (military? entertainment?) who has always had subordinates doing all the 'details' stuff. Then when he needs to produce these forgeries he doesn't dare ask anyone, he takes to the keyboard himself.

"Out of touch" doesn't even begin to describe what CBS did -- what CBS News is. --------
Well said. They could have added, or been more honest by saying CBS that 'anti-Bush' and 'anti-conservative' describes CBS.
In a way, even thought this article is very nasty in appearance to CBS, it also acts as a smoke screen. The REAL evil with CBS is their decades-long practise of lying about conservatives and conservative interests. The REAL evil of CBS is that they have consciously lied about and slanted the news for decades. CBS is the lowest of the low, because the news is too important to be slanted.

And how many FReepers are addicted to Forensic Files, The New Detectives, The FBI Files, Body of Evidence, etc., etc., on the Discovery Channel and Court TV?
At my house, we amateur sleuths have diagnostic contests -- who can first call out the heavy metal used for poisoning based on the symptoms described? Was it Munchausen's by Proxy or insurance fraud? What do I look at to tell if that will is genuine?

CBS simply met Abe Lincoln.

No less than four FReepers worked with that esoteric anachronistic icon- the IBM Selectric Composer in the early 70's. CBS couldn't find one user.

It required making an ordinary observation: "Hey, these things don't look like they were typed in 1972." It just required being part of the real world.

I think you have solved the mystery of who made the documents! I don't know about Burkett's financial status , but he retired from the [Army] National Guard as a Lt Col. so he was used to dictating docs, not typing them.
If he had subcontracted the task, so to speak, a professional forger would have done a less sloppy job.

My vote is still on Robin Rather until proven otherwise as the forger.
But still, I guess that we could consider that Mapes herself could be "Lucy Ramirez".

Whoever thought that computer docs could be sold as typewritten has to have lived in a bubble or never seen atypewritten letter in his/her life. Both Rather and Mapes are probably familiar with typewriters. Burkett seem s around the bend enough to have tried the deception.
