Burkett: Lockhart Asked Me for Rathergate Documents

Former National Guard commander Bill Burkett has become the first player in the CBS forged document scandal to implicate John Kerry's presidential campaign, telling the Fort Worth Star Telegram that top Kerry aide Joe Lockhart pressed him to turn over damaging evidence on George Bush.

During a single phone conversation with Lockhart, Burkett told the Telegram that he suggested a "couple of concepts on what I thought (Kerry) had to do" to beat Bush.

In return, he said, Lockhart tried to "convince me as to why I should give them the documents." Lockhart has staunchly denied that he ever discussed the forged documents with Burkett, though he confirmed that a conversation had indeed taken place in a call arranged by "60 Minutes" producer Mary Mapes.

But with Burkett now claiming otherwise, Republicans have their first evidence of Rathergate wrongdoing that directly implicates the Kerry campaign.

Burkett also complained that "60 Minutes" anchorman Dan Rather tried to set him up as a "fall guy" in the forged document scandal during his mea culpa broadcast on Monday.

"He snipped [my interview] apart to cover them," he told the Telegram. "That's all that that evening news was - to find a fall guy. And it was me."

"Dan Rather ruined my reputation in front of 70 million people," he added.

Burkett's former lawyer said Tuesday that the controversial Guardsman was preparing a lawsuit against CBS.

CBS source denies plotting with Kerry

By Jack Douglas Jr.

Star-Telegram Staff Writer

This article has been corrected from the version published in the newspaper and online Friday morning to reflect that Bill Burkett was referring to conversations with CBS when he said, "They tried to convince me as to why I should give them the documents." The earlier version incorrectly reported that he had discussed the documents with Joe Lockhart of the Kerry campaign.

This is B-E-A-utiful!!!!!!! Now the left is in the position of having to discredit Burkett! (Of course, that should be easy because he is so easily discredited. But, if they do that, EVERYTHING Burkett says is discredited!) Hmmmmm.....what are we to believe?????? Lockhart? Burkett?

It is now time for the FBI to look into this.

Amen! A national news organization has been caught in cahoots with the DNC to try and bring down a sitting president with forgeries. Many people need to be in jail.

What hit me is that if cBS really cared about the validity of this story, wouldn't they have called Bush (who could verify the documents) instead of Kerry?

These documents supposedly came from Killian's personal files. How could the WH verify the authenticity of those?

Right, they just talked about the weather, under water basket weaving, and the writings of Albert Camus.

Don't be silly, Louis L'Amour is much more popular in Texas than Camus!

This continuing story has had one positive effect for Kerry. It has made Bush's NG service the focus and not his own military service and antiwar activities. Kerry has started to emerge from hiding after more than month. The RNC needs to make Kerry the focus of media attention.

Not sure if its been discussed here yet. 7 days before documents had been released, Terry McAwful used some of the terminology from the forged documents in a press statement. So, its pretty clear that the DNC had a hand in crafting them or at least had them in their dirty fingers well ahead of time.

If Burkett is Lucy Ramirez, will the shoes match the purse?

More importantly, will the collar match the cuffs?

Newsmax, Fox and Drudge have picked it up, but will the big boys even bother to ask Lockhart about this? Major, major suppression is underway. Will it work?

I hope so. I was kind of surprised that the WP and other major newspapers picked up on the RatherGate story. Since these are old clintoon folks - their heroes - it is likely they'll try to bury this one is my thinking. I wouldn't be surprised, anyway ......

You know, I was thinking about this, some of the language in those documents sounds familiar to me. Like the term "sugar coat" for example, but I can't put my finger on it. Now that you mention it, doesn't Terry dearest use that term a lot? Someone should do that, compare the "documents" to the language used by DNC and Kerry operatives. People tend to use the same words over and over and may be we can trace back that way. I also thought it sounded like Begala. Doesn't he say "sugar coat" a bunch on Crossfire?

"I've known Kerry for 25 years. He's a patriot. I'm listening to what he has to say," he tells Mike Wallace."

Yes. I guess everyone in Manhattan thinks patriots visit with the enemies of America and tell lies about our soldiers.

Lockhart has staunchly denied that he ever discussed the forged documents with Burkett...

As I remember it, Lockhart didn't "staunchly deny" discussing the documents with Burkett. He said, "I don't recall" discussing them. As we all know, using an "I don't recall" response to a potentially embarrassing or incriminating question is the standard tactic of liars.

Since Lockhart has long experience answering such questions while in Bubba's employ, I think it's unlikely he would forget how to answer them now.
