Mugabe draws cheers at the UN

Zimbabwe's President Robert Mugabe, long a thorn in the side of the United States and Britain, drew applause at the United Nations on Wednesday for a scathing speech that tore into the Iraq war allies.

Mugabe blasted the two nations for holding up the reform of the UN Security Council in "calculated" attempts at trying to preserve their influence at the UN.

"Ironically, it is some of the same forces that since last year have been raining bombs and hellfire on innocent Iraqis, purportedly in the name of democracy," he said.

"Iraq today has become a vast inferno created by blatant and completely illegal and defiant acts of aggression by the United States, Britain and their allies," Mugabe said.

"We are now being coerced to accept and believe that a new political-cum-religious doctrine has arisen, namely that 'There is but one political god, George Bush, and Tony Blair is his prophet,'" he said.

That line, a play on a well-known saying of Islamic prayer, drew applause from diplomats gathered at the UN General Assembly for the annual two-week debate of world leaders.

Mugabe also condemned Britain's work for his ouster, including sanctions against his country.

"Zimbabwe has also had to withstand unprovoked, declared and undeclared sanctions, imposed by Britain and its allies who are bent on bringing down our legitimately elected government," he said.

"Mr Tony Blair, the British prime minister, has arrograntly and unashamedly announced in his Parliament that his government was working with Zimbabwe's oppositionparty to bring about regime change," he said.

"Once again, the lawless nature of this man who, along with his Washington master, believes he is God-ordained to rule our world, has shown itself," Mugabe said. - Sapa-AFP

Yep, these are the people that Kerry wishes to form a new coalition with.

God help us if this man finds his way into the White House.

Pray as if your life depends on it; it just might.

Ditto. My contempt for these smarmy, self-righteous, putrid, odious particles of vomit is limitless.

How much more proof do we need that the UN is simply a bunch of thugs, murderers and terrorists playacting in front of cameras.

Anyone who spews hate for America and the West is applauded.

So why does the US need to remain in the UN, again??? Someone, please remind me.

Nah.... don't bother.

And you reckon you're getting the shaft!

Yes, we are.

After all, we have to host the riffraff, not you. And not just anywhere, but on acres in the middle of the choicest real estate in Manhattan.

I'd rather see a waste-treatment facility there, it would be more useful.

I guess this is what happens when you give people more than they deserve...

Self-convicted children. They are running the UN (except for the US and UK paying for it) and running amok at that.

Can any of you figure out where their country lies on a map? Next.

Uh-yes. And it's really Rhodesia1. 'Founded' by Cecil Rhodes of 'Rhodes Scholarship' fame.

1 - I can't speak Bantu, so I still call it by it's real name.

"The US pays 22% of the US budget not the UN budget. Britain pays 5.3% of the British budget. How do you figure that you pay more per head than the US does?"

What is "the British budget" & "the US budget"?

I think you'll find that the numbers refereed to the UN budget, if they referred to the US & UK GDP's or public sector spend, we'd all be paying a lot more.

Fact is, the US contributes around 22% or the budget and the UK around 5.4%. If the budget was, lets say, 1 billion dollars, the US would be paying $220,000,000 and the UK $54,000,000. The population of the USA is approx' 290 million & the population of the UK is around 59 million. Therefore, the US would be paying around 76 cents per American, while the UK would be paying around 92 cents per Brit.

Thus, we are getting shafted worse than you (if you leave aside the humiliation of having the likes of Mugabe applauded for slagging you off in your own back yard which is appalling)

yea, it's the wasteland right in the middle of Africa thanks to Mugabe. There's nothing worst than a hypocritical tyrant pointing fingers.

i still think the idea of using the UN and creating a new bloc of purely democratic states...and therefore begin the development of a positive democratic bloc thereby making the UN irrelevant as an institution...

Ah, Fester, its only a mere drop in the bucket.

Congress pisses away twice that much on bottled water and toilet paper.

Let's simply evict the UN and make certain that hallowed body is transferred to a country where their largesse can help the local economy. Zimbabwe would be an excellent location.

If we're paying 22 percent of the tab, we should get 22 percent of the total votes.

Golden Rule, and all that.

Mugabe, hmmm, isn't he the one who supports killing white farmers and taking their land? Seems I heard about a bit of a recent skuffle down there.
