In a week in which it was burnt by at least one high-profile source, CBS News is being accused by another of having used and abandoned him. The Observer has learned that CBS News and Dan Rather made use of Jonathan (Jack) Idema, a former Green Beret, mercenary and rogue soldier, who was tried and sentenced on Sept. 15 to 10 years in an Afghan prison for operating a private jail and torturing civilians he claimed were Al Qaeda operatives.
Mr. Idema is now accusing CBS News of abandoning him after having what appears to have been an ad hoc arrangement with the mercenary soldier in which he used CBS equipment and personnel to transmit information to Mr. Rather for possible use in CBS broadcasts.
Mr. Idema is also accusing the U.S. Department of Defense, which he claims to have had a working relationship with, of abandoning him.
According to Mr. Idema’s lawyer, John Edwards Tiffany, as well as network sources and people on the ground in Kabul, CBS News had prior knowledge of Mr. Idema’s private jail before his arrest on July 5. According to early reports, eight prisoners were interrogated and tortured there, some found hanging from the ceiling by their feet.

I thought it had already been established Idema was not Special Forces. CBS and Idema deserve each other.
What an incredible piece of info. So Rather was hoping for an exclusive interview with the evil enemy of our nation? And you can bet this piece of work would have "protected his source" had he met with osama! Sheesh!
Get on Westlaw and search this Idema character, and read some of the cases, criminal and civil, in which he has been a party. Sounds like a complete nutball.

If you really dig into info on this guy. You see that he has been left out to dry. He isn't just some screwball guy going after money. He is credited by some to be responsible for fingering 2 prominent spies. He fingered them with information he got from his sources. The FBI ans CIA(Pre 9-11) asked for his sources and he would not give them up. Bam in jail. Got out went to work with the northern alliance before the invasion and told the US government exactly were Osama Mamma Bin Laden was. They troops got there after a 5 day delay and guess what? Osama Bahama was gone.
I believe what this guy is saying could verywell be true.

I want Dan Rather off the air...permanently. I organized a small campaign today of 10 family members who took 2 mins to write in and say they are no longer watching CBS or CBS News until Rather is gone.
I think you all should do the same.

I agree, negative on the nutball. That's my first assumption, but the more I read, the more I think this guy was extremely motivated, quite effective... I admit I admire him. Shame he stepped on some toes and attracted the wrong attention. Triple shame on people leaving him to hang out to dry.

I would be careful about this claim. Frequently criminals try to claim they really "worked for the CIA" and this is just a variant on that, in my opinion.
Great post! Idema won't have credibility sitting in an Afghan jail, but if those tapes with him speaking to Rather were ever
obtained it would be electric.
