Schwarzenegger Vetoes Calif. Driver's License Bill

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on Wednesday vetoed a bill that would have allowed illegal immigrants to get a state driver's license.

The move was expected after Schwarzenegger cited security concerns in opposing the legislation, which had been proposed by Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez.

"One of the most important duties of the governor of a state is to protect its citizens," Schwarzenegger wrote in his veto message.

"Determining the true identity and history of an individual is a key component of that protection. This bill does not adequately address the security concerns that my Department of Homeland Security and I have and I cannot support it," he wrote.

In his drive last year to recall Gov. Gray Davis, Schwarzenegger campaigned hard against a similar law that approved driver's licenses for illegal immigrants, winning popular support for his stand.

After Schwarzenegger was sworn in as governor last January, state lawmakers repealed the license law.

Nunez, a Democrat from Los Angeles, was expected to issue a statement later on Wednesday, a spokesman said.

And do exactly nothing.

I am! Doing nothing is much better than creating lasting socialism!

Living in CA for 21 years, i know that positive things do not happen here. This is only temporary. Once Arnold has whatever "security measures" built into the driver licences, the illegals will be allowed to get one. And we Americans will suffer in some way for the benefit of the illegals.

"What a guy. We should be heaping praise on Arnold. "

EXACTLY ! He is our last line of defence - Now if we can start getting rid of some of those who presented this, we can take some of the pressure off him...

The Save Our License Committee, proponents of a NEW INITIATIVE TO PREVENT GOVERNMENT BENEFITS TO ILLEGAL ALIENS, commended Governor Schwarzenegger today for his veto of AB 2895.

"The Governor understands that Californians overwhelmingly do not want to put driver’s licenses and valid government identification papers into the hands of those who break our laws and come here illegally," said Mike Spence, President of the conservative California Republican Assembly, and one of the proponents of the initiative.

Petitions for this initiative will be available on Monday through the SaveOurLicense website.

Maybe Arnold is starting to understand you can win by really running as a conservative.

Not me. Him taking away our firearms is by no means a small issue. He lost my vote by this alone. I will never vote for a politico that takes my rights away.

So, you're saying he shouldn't have addressed it at all?

Sounds like it would pass in that case. Arnie didn't bring the matter before the governator. Representatives did. Give credit where it's due!

I just read the following on the Save Our License website: "Proponents will have 150 days to collect more than 600,000 signatures to place this on the June 2006 ballot."

2006?? :^(

I'm sure the signatures can be obtained, but I don't understand why they want to wait until 2006. I'll see what I can find out.

Even if it was safe to give illegals licenses we should never consider it because the aliens are ILLEGAL!!!

Exactly. He's made it clear that he's not opposed in principle to granting licenses to illegals. He just want to make sure there's enough police-state baggage attached to in order to satisfy his "Department of Homeland Security" - which of course an then be used as a precedent to springboard onto ordinary citizens. Nice, huh?

I received this answer from the California Republican Committee. I asked why it wouldn't be on the ballot until 2006.

"There is no state wide election in 2005. If there is a special state wide election it will be."

There is a typographical error in the first sentence. The word 'illegal' must have somehow gotten in there by mistake.

this guy is all over the place... for every two things he does right (this and the redskins issue), he does 2 stupid things (the .50 ban and gay partnership benefits).
Frankly I'm more concerned with this views on gun control and homosexuality than on the other stuff.
