SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on Wednesday vetoed a bill that would have allowed illegal immigrants to get a state driver's license.
The move was expected after Schwarzenegger cited security concerns in opposing the legislation, which had been proposed by Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez.
"One of the most important duties of the governor of a state is to protect its citizens," Schwarzenegger wrote in his veto message.
"Determining the true identity and history of an individual is a key component of that protection. This bill does not adequately address the security concerns that my Department of Homeland Security and I have and I cannot support it," he wrote.
In his drive last year to recall Gov. Gray Davis, Schwarzenegger campaigned hard against a similar law that approved driver's licenses for illegal immigrants, winning popular support for his stand.
After Schwarzenegger was sworn in as governor last January, state lawmakers repealed the license law.
Nunez, a Democrat from Los Angeles, was expected to issue a statement later on Wednesday, a spokesman said.
Gil Cedillo was the main force behind this bill, not Nunez.
What a guy. We should be heaping praise on Arnold. That must have take a lot of guts. Boy, he really doesn't mess around.
Go team!
Remember the idiots that voted or chose not to vote that put the idiots in the legislature. ;-)

Mexico City Members of the Assembly of California have asked the Mexican Senate (sic) to beseech Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to sign the bill so that almost 2 million undocumented Mexicans can obtain drivers licenses that would serve as identification...
...Marco Antonio Firebaugh, said that the governor is the one who has the ability to make it law, to give this right to Mexicans, whether they have settled in California or not... We want the Mexican people to know that the measure is on his desk... However it is now September and he has not responded whatsoever, although we will insist on approval of the bill, basically so that illegal migrants can have access to education and health services in the U.S..."
Assemblywoman Cindy Montañez, from the San Fernando Valley, said that it is vital for Mexico to ask Schwarzenegger to approve this legislation "so that he would know that not only people of California, but an entire country is asking that he sign the bill."
For all the doubters BUMP!
Wow, I am impressed. I heard about that PC bill he vetoed, and now this!!!
I still am apprehensive about the people he's pardoned, from what I've read, it shouldn't have been done. Unless someone's got different (but accurate) info...
Waytago, Arnold.
RINOld must have gotten the message...
Sign the bill and you sign your political death warrant!!!
Any questions, RINOld?
Guess not,
since he vetoed the bill!
NYTOL!
Ya and they ride the bus here in OC, and pay in $ bills.
I'll give Gov. Arnold credit--he's been doing better than I thought he would!
Arnold also spiked a proposal to ban school team names like "Redskins" saying it was up to local school boards. He's not conservative enough for me, but I do think he is gonna do wonders for California, esp. considering that Gray Davis f-ed it up.
Not for America as a whole, and certainly not for me, but he is as conservative as Californians will probably elect right now. I don't buy the "you need to be moderate to be electable" argument on a national basis (in fact, I think moderate Republicans are sure losers on the national stage), but I do buy it in states like CA, NY, and MA. Give me Schwarzenegger, Pataki, and Romney any day over the Democrat alternative in those states. Just don't ask me to get all excited about them on the national stage.
What is fascinating to me is that Schwarzenegger seems to be pushing the envelope to see just how far to the right he and the California GOP can go and still win elections. If this is true, it is excellent politics, since it will convince California conservatives (and no Republican can get elected without their enthusiastic support) that he is trying as hard as he can...
Our borders do need to be secured, and our immigration laws enforced (if for no other reason than that our high immigration rates are filling Democrat voter rosters faster than middle class minorities are leaving the Dems for the GOP, and always will.)
Who better to lead the charge against illegal immigration than an immigrant? I hope Schwarzenegger continues down this path.
Well credit where credit is due. I'm still not impressed with the .50 cal ban though, but I'll take what I can get.
Do much Winnebago hunting with that .50 cal?
Also today Arnold signed a bill (SB 1234) expanding hate crime victim status to include those believed to be associated with or a member of a protected group. Christian fundamentalist groups claim it will undermine free speech rights of Christians.
Just as a note, it may seem like he's taking a long time but the Democrat legislature has dumped around 900 bills on his desk for veto or signing.
One veto ain't enough to remove a gun grabbing RINO label from a RINO. LOL.
I can put a round in the thorax of a man-sized silhouette at 2100 yards with mine. But it might take me a couple of minutes to make the calulations depending on wind and differences in elevation.
Winnebago engine blocks are soft, easy targets. Hardly sporting at all.
